Don’t blow at high dough was something Gord Downie’s grandmother used to say, in reference to bread rising while it bakes. It’s as if she were saying don’t get ahead of yourself. Because of this, it only seems logical that the song is about just that: getting ahead of yourself. Which makes sense with the “moves so fast, into that wedding ring” line. “The faster it gets, the less you need to know” is saying that if you’re smooth sailing, you don’t have to worry about much. However “the smarter it gets, the further it’s gonna go” kinda contradicts this and says that you should always have your guard up no matter what; if you’re gonna get ahead of yourself, at least be smart about it. |
