I read it as somebody expressing a general feeling of regret in life, who's mourning the loss of innocence/naivete (that comes with age, & its inevitability) with a heavy sigh. Racked with the guilt & shame of wasted time, day by day passes him and he feels like he has no control... and is aimlessly stuck in this foggy perpetual state of numb surrender. |

IMO the suggestion of the imagery of the crow being inspired by a Greek myth of a psychopomp raven; while I don't believe is THAT farfetched, doesn't totally fit as well as the suggestion of the crow being a metaphor for the night (and thus fear, death & uncertainty). To me, makes a lot of sense with the other lyrics regarding the fleeting dawn. The song overall, seems too vague to imply such a deep, unexplored motif like that of the mythological allegory. If such a story were the inspiration, I feel it would have been made more clear, or at least hinted at with more detail or parallel.... |

@[elitestreet:24085] "the crow is night" metaphor --- i think that's an astute observation, i think I and many other people have a tendency to overthink, dramatize & personalize meaning from poetry/lyrics, when often the most likely answer is much simpler & more non-specific. It's not a bad thing to derive personal meaning from music, in fact, its the only true way to fully enjoy it, (sometimes, i think even learning the "true" meaning of the song later from say, a quote from the artist or what-have-you... can leave you feeling disappointed, that it didn't aline with your interpretation) *BUT* for those who, like me, enjoy trying to decipher the true intent of a song... it helps to hear other's perception of it, right or wrong, cuz you see the words thru an unfamilier slant that can either bolster your confidence in your interpretation or cause you to rexamine something that you missed, despite how obvious. |

| These Arms Are Snakes – Lady North Lyrics

First off, i worship this band, from the guitar riffs to drums to lyrics. Few come as close to what I'd aspire to, musically. But anyways...
At first i thought the song might be about pollution or the destruction of the planet but rereading it, it seems to me like the theme of mold, pestilence, rot and poison are a metaphor for America and a cultural corrosion of federalism and our values and a movement towards ignorance, dependancy and complacency. And he's lost all hope that even if We The People were to start waking up & thinking for ourselves, it's too little too late to change course. He expresses a dissatisfaction for people who think they are paying attention, but really are just standing around waiting to follow someone else. (like birds needing to be fed) And despite all this he seems to watch it all like you'd watch a car accident, with a morbid curiosity, stimulation from self-destruction. As all the states shatter and erode into history, that we share this fate (the same list of names) and he will be there too.
Lady North could be a reference to North America or the Statue of Liberty. I will say, to me the meaning of this song is very similar to the song AEnima by Tool. Just a thought... |
