I don't think the song is about suicide. It's a feeling so close to it, perhaps. I see it as a profound detachment from the world and people in general, a feeling that everyone wants you gone. As the song goes the descent is deeper and deeper, the movement from soil to the sea (the ocean, better) is a way of going back to what may be one of the first feelings we have as human beings, the safenes of the womb — that's why he smiles, he knows he's going to a safe place, but a place in which you cannot endure, since you're grown up and have to deal with life. Since he can't do it (on a daily basis), everything crashes before his eyes at the very depth of the feeling. The name of the song is somewhat a silly and at the same time very serious manner of telling (in retrospective) that it felt like the end of his world, the whole world, yet life continues. |
