He can't make up his mind if he wants to go or not. He's vacillating and will not or can not make up his mind. Many times a man and woman enter into a relationship and one is a hell of a lot more in love than the other. Unfortunate,yes,but it happens all the time. Somebody is going to get hurt and it will last maybe forever. Machismo takes over sometimes and a man feels like I'm not going to let anybody nail me down. Years later he might look back and say," she was the one", but by then it is usually way too late. Petty meant for a lot of his songs to be heart breakers,no pun intended, and I'd have to say he did a pretty good job. |

It is just one of the most perfect road songs of all time. You have got to have a primo stereo system and car for this song. Meant for stoned-out road warriors like Kowalski in "Vanishing Point'. Blowing through the Nevada desert with the music cranked mach 10. Next you play Rockin' Down The Highway , Doobie Bros. Then "Radar Love", Golden Earring Moontan." La Grange" ,ZZ Top is next followed by" Green River" CCR. Now you guys add some road trip classics. |

This song is about unrequited love male or female. It evokes a memory of that one beautiful person in your life that you could not have. For whatever reason it was just never meant to be.They never thought the same way about you as you felt about them. Maybe it was because they belonged to your best friend. You met them too late.But, when you went to a party and they were there, you spent hours talking to them and just wanting to be in their presence.
