Wilson Pickett – Mustang Sally Lyrics 3 years ago
Very simple. The song is about sex.....and Sally's reluctance to supply it as a reward for the guy giving her a snappy new set of wheels! And, because he gave her those wheels.....she's always somewhere else!

That's what makes the song great. The subject matter is delivered in minimal lyrics clad in enough euphemism to get played it on the radio. A terrific groove, and a rousing chorus.

For some reason girls love this song. And the more drunk they are.....the more they love it! Why? Is it the empowerment (Sally's got the upper hand)? Is it just the opportunity to bawl out the chorus in unison but out of tune? Who knows....but it's a winner.

Tom Waits – Hold On Lyrics 6 years ago
I think trying to extract a fully definitive story-line from this song is fairly pointless, because Tom Waits is such a fine lyricist that he deliberately gives the listener blanks to fill in themselves. One person's interpretation of those blanks is as good as another's, and acceptance of another's merely cheats your own imagination. It's the reason folks still read books and don't just watch movies!
I'd say it's the incomplete glimpses together with the carefully placed gems of detail that make it such a beautiful song. The deep reverb and very subdued guitar figures together with that late night upright bass create the patented Waits atmosphere of barfly memories mumbled over a glass.
For what it's worth, I've always thought the last verse 'ten below and falling' swaying and dreaming, was a precursor to a hypothermic death. End of story. But don't take my word for it.

Dobie Gray – drift away Lyrics 7 years ago
This song straddles country, soul and laid back rock (and one look at a picture of Mentor R. Williams, the writer, will tell you where his loyalties lay). The genre emphasis is down to the performer. Don't forget Dobie Gray was a soul singer (In Crowd). Anyhoo, lyrically my take has always been that it is supposed to reflect the musings of a touring country musician struggling to make it in an endless line of half-empty bar dates.
Don't care fore Uncle Kracker thing, as to me that sounds like a real bar band doing a going-through-the-motions cover! Each to his own of course. Mr. Gray himself helps out in that recording and adds the soul which otherwise would be completely absent.
