@[kflaux:49298] There's an explanation on the page for "Me and Julio down by the Schoolyard" that draws similar parallels with that song and Romeo and Juliet. I think the case is greater for "Call me Al" being a reference to the Divine Comedy, but I really think both are true. |

@[hgrindrod:49295] I had not considered this since it's been 25 years or so since I read R&J, though due to Paul Simon's comments that it was about something sexual I figured it was about experimenting with another boy. No boy's parents would really care if their son was messing around with another girl enough to get the law involved.
But what you describe is a thing that PS was known to do in his cryptic songs, like how 'Call Me Al' obliquely recalls Dante's Divine Comedy, and I think you're right.
I never liked it when English teachers read symbolism into places where it was unnecessary, but it helps me appreciate these songs more. I love how carefree this song is, how he's not anxious about not knowing where he's going, taking his time. It's a frequent earworm. |

@[nylaw129:42458] thank you. I’ve always thought “one more shadow leans against the wall” was powerful af. It refers to the shadows you can still see because the radiation was so hot that it devoured the people but bc radiation is mostly light the areas shadowed by the people were less burned than the rest of the wall. It’s nuts. |

“ But it’s the album’s sparsest and, arguably, most beautiful composition, “Raining in Baltimore” that delivers the greatest gut-punch. Durtiz claims to have written it after learning of the death of his grandmother who lived in the Charm City where he had been born. He was on tour with the Crows in Australia at the time and wrestled with the decision to return to Maryland. “I realized I\'d been putting work before everything, forever," Duritz told the Baltimore Sun in 2010. "At 6 in the morning, I called American [Airlines] and said, \'You gotta find me a way home.’” \r\n\r\nWith only a piano as accompaniment, Duritz melodically and lyrically paints with brushstrokes of grey and white, making the somberness and distance he’s pushing through on his way back overseas fully tangible to the listener. It remains one of his most poignant accomplishments as a songwriter.”\r\n\r\n— https://albumism.com/features/counting-crows-debut-album-august-and-everything-after-turns-25-anniversary-retrospective |

According to an interview with Adam, his grandmother died in Baltimore while he was on tour in Australia, and that’s what this song is about, torn between work and family obligations and ultimately making the decision to fly home. |

I’m pretty sure that this song is written from Lauren Mayberry to the drummer and is a song of encouragement, solidarity, and faith in their ability as a band to channel their individual strengths into music that is worthy of “gold“ status in the charts. |

To me it’s about a relationship where you have to lean on your significant other more than they have to lean on you, the song is in recognition and gratitude for that.
Also, corrections “storm” not “star,” “shaped” not “shape,” “holding to a hope you’ll undermine,” “if ever I try to push away” (you is understood) |

Maybe it's because of personal experience, but I think it's about relapsing on drugs after a brief period of recovery. |
