The hippie movement had the correct ideas, but the wrong execution. It ironically became a hateful fad that got followers from disgruntled teenage girls who hated their parents. The song calls out the irony inside the hippie movement and says that if those peoples had actually loved everyone, and not just one another, they could have made a real difference. "And their kids are hippie chicks all hypocrites"
Smash Mouth, with this song, hopes to do what the hippie's could never do; say that one should love EVERYONE. "This is a love attack I know it went out but it's back".
If we don't listen to Smash Mouth, no matter who we are, we might as well be walking on the sun. |

In an attempt to get his crush to like him he wears sunglasses to take on the persona of a "tough guy" but after winning over his crush he realizes that she not in love with him but instead in love with the "guy in shades". |

I'm a middle schooler so this is gonna sound a bit cliche, but I believe this song is about insecurities. Let me explain further. As a middle schooler, I've had my share of girls that hate me that I had a "crush on". I believe this song is about the insecurities of talking to the girl you like because you know that you'll get rejected by her. So you just stay away from her because you don't want to be emotionally hurt. |

My interpretation has changed. I now believe the song is about equality in the way that "we're just the same" meaning we are all equal to each other no matter what skin color or gender we are. No matter what we are all worth the same and all have equal rights. |
