The chorus is directly lifted from Cormac McCarthy's novel, "Blood Meridian: Or The Evening Redness in the West": "Drink up, he said. Drink up. This night thy soul may be required of thee". This quote comes from Judge Holden, an almost supernatural being that roams the wild west with Glanton's Gang and the protagonist, The Kid. In the novel, he's often shown commiting horrific acts, including raping and killing children. He's also shown to be prolific in arts and at one point is shown drawing plants and animals in a notebook. When asked why, he answers: “Whatever in creation exists without my knowledge exists without my consent”. |
