I always felt this song conveyed the idea of how one's beliefs can be downsized to something that becomes so simplified by time or people that it sort of becomes a caricature. I imagine a pagan god statue at a restaurant somewhere, when once people may have worshiped something like that. The ending lines "Now I am Silly" seems to be from both the band and the spirit of these idols he's talking about. They may feel silly because they were once powerful, now they are reduced. The middle of the song writes a story of how there was once a deity that the people went to and would receive what is necessary to live through his word that he provided rain for food to grow. What is really striking how Murphy discusses how love became the way people began to operate, instead of maybe just plain surviving and the previous deity soon became a representation of something disrespected or belittled. |

This is a love song that borders on misogyny in a comedic fashion. The line "You can use a little Mr. Clean/ A formula 409" kinda makes me think he's referring to himself as a cleaning solution for a partner, and even all the world's problems. But the partner can clean the kitchen lol. Kinda hilarious if you're into that kind of humor. |
