Stevie has a kick ass voice and in this amazing song she unleashes it's full power and it's overwhelming. It gives me chills every time I hear it. It's amusing to find out that I've been singing the wrong lyrics for 35 years. I always thought it was "just like a one winged dove" - meaning it was damaged and wouldn't survive without her TLC, just like the young fella on the edge of seventeen. Learning that the song is really about 2 deaths is a little disconcerting but doesn't change my love of this song. |

| Ozzy Osbourne – You Can't Kill Rock & Roll Lyrics | 8 years ago |

There will never be another like Ozzy, a true original. When he sings this one live he puts so much into it that you know it means a lot to him (and probably still pisses him off). It's ironic that even though some people have done everything in their power to kill rock and roll and replace it with rap, classic rock is still number 1, thanks to musical geniuses like Ozzy and Rhoads. Long live rock! |

Not just BOC's best song (followed closely by Heavy Metal: Black and Silver) but one of the best rock songs of all time!!! This song is a tribute to the cult following of Godzilla movie lovers, nothing more. Long Live Godzilla! |

| @[Major:23635] Valor Hilarious interpretation!!... oh, you are serious - don't read too much into a simple (yet great) horror movie or the song BOC made in tribute. | |

Tale of a heroin addict wanting/needing to get high with someone (probably a friend or sex partner), and convincing her or him to do just that. Follow me into the desert As thirsty as you are “I’m in this empty place but you’re in a bad place too so trust me (follow) and it’ll all be ok.” Crack a smile and cut your mouth And drown in alcohol Drug use dries out the mouth and can cause severe cracks in the lips that bleed like cuts when smiling. These 2 lines are to indicate addiction, without mentioning heroin, and are important clues, as alcohol alone won’t cause lip cracking. 'Cause down below the truth is lying Beneath the riverbed We all have our own “truths” (demons) buried under the surface (and he is offering the other person a way to deal with them). So quench yourself and drink the water That flows below her head Get stoned to help deal with your problems. “Her head” is the tip of the needle. Oh no there she goes - “she” = heroin (going into a vein) Out in the sunshine the sun is mine. The sun is mine This is the two of them ‘shooting up’ heroin. “Sunshine” is a term that describes being stoned on opiates and when the stone is ‘coming on’ a feeling of oneness with (and control/dominance of) the universe gives rise to “the sun is mine”, said once for each of them. I shot my love today would you cry for me? - “I injected heroin today, pity me my addiction” I lost my head again would you lie for me? - “I couldn’t help it, please cover/lie for me” The dramatic change in music for these lines indicates he is now stoned. I believe these 2 lines (the chorus) are sung at us, the listeners, who represent the world (family, lovers, friends, co-workers) outside of his drug bubble, not the other person in the song. Close your eyes and bow your head - “bow your head to the horse” I need a little sympathy He’s back singing to the other person, who is now ‘on the nod’ also known as ‘bowing one’s head to the horse (heroin)’. These terms are used when someone stoned on heroin passes out for a few seconds and then wakes up and their head comes up and a second later it goes down and then up, then down repeatedly (it looks like they are nodding in very slow motion). In this context I see “sympathy” as meaning 'company on his sad journey'. 'Cause fear is strong and love's for everyone Who isn't me Fear and not being loved are his excuses to get stoned. (Heroin makes the situation worse, requiring more heroin to compensate - a vicious, self-destructive circle ensues) Kill your health and kill yourself And kill everything you love And if you live you can fall to pieces And suffer with my ghost Telling the other person how messed up it is to be an addict and destroy everything in your life, “but if you do it too, and survive, we can go through it (“suffer”) together”. I shot my love today would you cry for me? - “pity my lack of control” I lost my head again would you lie for me? - “and help me hide my problem” I left her in the sand just a burden in my hand I lost my head again would you cry for me He put down his drugs/syringe, but still feels it’s pull (metaphorical weight in hand), “I couldn’t help getting stoned again, please feel sorry for me” Just a burden in my hand - the constant reminder of his need to be stoned Just an anchor on my heart. - the addiction making him love only heroin Just a tumor in my head. - the addiction that controls him And I'm in the dark - no idea what’s going on or how he can take control The use of the word "just" and the change in vocals (to make them sound like they are off in the distance) shows the diminishing significance of his concerns about his addiction, now that he’s somewhat stoned. So follow me into the desert As desperate as you are Where the moon is glued to a picture of heaven And all the little pigs have God - a reference to heroin dealers having good product Trying to convince the other person to shoot up again, using stoned imagery and fantasy. Oh no there she goes Out in the sunshine the sun is mine The sun is mine They shoot up again. I shot my love today would you cry for me? Yeah! - this “yeah” is arrogant I lost my head again would you lie for me? Left her in the sand just a burden in my hand I lost my head again would you cry for me, yeah - this “yeah” is subdued Would you cry for me? The sudden uptempo of the music and “don’t give a shit” attitude (smug tone of voice and addition of “yeah!”) indicate that he is very stoned ('has a good head') after the second injection and is ‘feeling no pain’. Now the chorus sounds more like bragging than looking for sympathy, until the second more resigned “yeah” and final repetition of “would you cry for me” when his tone of voice goes down - his pain starts returning as he realizes his feeling of being in control is an illusion, that the ‘burden remains in his hand’ - that “his love” heroin is his master. This song makes you feel a wee bit stoned at the same time they are feeling stoned (not sure how, something to do with the progressions?) - which is why people feel great after hearing it, but then they think about the lyrics and don’t understand why they feel so good about a whiny murderer. This song is literally awesome and nothing short of true genius!! |
