I thought this was about a child describing a mystical experience with a being like St. Michael. A parent scolds him for these absurd beliefs that are real to the child. The child wants to be reunited with the being but will have to spend time "downstairs" (ie on earth) first. It reminds me of the story of young Percival first encountering the knights, which inspires him to begin his spiritual journey becoming a knight. |

@[hipitipi:35978] It's about a man who hears a woman suffering and is tortured by the fact that he feels compassion for her (because he's also crying) and wants her but can't do anything about it. There's a reason why the song appears in Wim Wender's The Wings of Desire, which is a movie about angels who watch people suffering and feel for them but can't do anything to intervene, and in turn they suffer a little themselves because of it.It's a very unconventional love song. |

@[dergrimnebulin:35605] Yes, exactly. It's also worth noting that the working title of the song was Dolores Haze, the title character's given name. |

@[TedPikul:23057] Yikes! I don't know if you mean "fantasy" as in a story they dreamt up or something they wished to do. I'm speculating here but I wouldn't be surprised if it's actually about abuse one of them experienced firsthand from childhood. Pete Townsend wrote several bizarrely cheery songs about his own abuse. Again, just a wild guess. |
