courtney never introduced kurt to heroin. she stopped using before she met kurt but started again. kurt allegedly did heroin first in 1990. i read somewhere that this is about his first time doing cough syrup with courtney, but who knows. |

i heard somewhere that courtney wrote this when she thought kurt didn't love her anymore. the imagery is beautiful. i see it as women coping through the dramatic changes our bodies goes through in a way (not necessarily puberty). it's a very delicate and emotionally fragile time. this song screams fragility. kind of like how emotions affect us physically. sorry, i tend to be a very unorganized writer. |

while courtney has said this song is about an old boyfriend, i think that there's no way this isn't a little bit about kurt. i agree that not every song she writes is about him. but i think even subconsciously, she has kurt in mind. kurt went to rehab in malibu, before escaping and committing suicide. i view this as her saying you should have stayed in rehab (malibu), please go back. if he had stayed, maybe he would still be here with us. i also think that the line "how are you so burnt when you're barely on fire" is a reference to his suicide note, when he says "it's better to burn out than fade away". and "please don't go any higher" maybe references his drug use. and furthermore, i think this has a lot of her emotional regret, which is common in those who have lost loved ones to suicide, who wish they had done more. "i'm gonna rescue you, i'm gonna set you free", "oh come on, be alive again" "i knew love would tear you apart" maybe kurt and courtney wouldn't have been together forever if he was still alive, but when you love someone as much as they loved each other, you never really stop. i still love my ex very much, but i know we cannot be together without falling apart. so although she says it's about someone else, i still think there's no way there's not a little kurt in this one. |
