I also see it as an anti-bush song, but I think it can be tied into a certain type of people you can run into in life... I have a friend named Kyle Augustino. He's a Republican hailing from the south who would have TOTALLY supported bush if he had been old enough to understand what was going on at the time he was president. The thing about Kyle is... he's one of those "macho bad boy" types. Or at least he thinks he is. He thinks he's all cool by doing drugs, drinking, having sex at 14 and being misogynistic, etc. Although I think this whole attitude ties into the fact that he's had a tough life and is using this as a band-aid for a broken heart How does this tie into "Helicopter"? "North to South Empty" Okay this part is taking a little freedom as it says "North to South" and not "South to North" but anyway, Kyle is a southern hailing republican, and now that he's moved into a liberal, suburban Maryland community, he's a fish out of water. A lot of people here at school really don't like him due to his republicanism and jokes about women. Because of this lack of friends, he feels "Empty". Get it? "Running on Bravado" Kyle thinks he is "cool" and stuff by acting in this macho way. "As if to say, as if to say As if to say he doesn't like chocolate" Kyle doesn't like chocolate lol "He's born a liar, he'll die a liar Some things will never be different" This line is an example of Kyle's unforgiving, fixed mindset. Once you are good or bad in his book, you stay that way forever. No exceptions. "Stop being, so American There's a time and there's a place So James Dean So blue jeans" Republican. Pro-Gun. Comes from a military family. Goes from one girl to the next. Drinks beer. Plays catch with his dad. Acts like an alpha male. All things to describe Kyle. He needs to quit with this whole "American bad boy" act. It's already got him into trouble "Are you hoping for a miracle?" He thinks he can just continue with this and do whatever he wants and expect for a miracle to save him. "Just like his dad, just like his dad (the same mistakes)" I feel like he got a lot of this from his dad But yeah. Just so you know Kyle has lots of redeeming qualities too. But I think this song is not just about bush, but also about annoying alpha male types that try too hard. Thanks :) |
