Honestly, although I love this song and it always pumps me up, it also really depresses me. This is one of those songs where, in order to realize what it means, you also need to listen to Freddie's voice, such as the line where he sings, "That's my destiny." If you listen closely, you can kind of hear his voice crack in a desolate manner. Without even reading the lyrics, I can tell from that crack that this song is sung in an entirely sarcastic tone about his given title as a bad guy, which he builds off with different metaphors. This song can be very easily seen as conceited and arrogant, but that's an issue that Freddie has always faced with in his career. His confidence in himself and his talent made him look like an asshole to others, hence the "destiny" part of this song, in which Freddie realizes that, in order to be himself, others will always reprimand him. Due to this conclusion I've made while listening to this song, I suppose a majority of the reason why this song depresses me is that I connect with it too much, due to the bullying I experienced as a child, which consequently destroyed my confidence. However, despite how depressed this song makes me feel, I also enjoy listening to it, because Freddie never ended up like me in that he never allowed his confidence to quiver in public despite his given title as a bad guy; this song somewhat makes me look up to him for that. |
