Responded to an old comment and figured I'd put it here too: I interpret this song as aristocratic date where a lady of commonwealth disguises herself to go on a date with a wealthier man. They attended the opera and after go to a party, where things go awry and the lady leaves the man. I have no clue what the "child is the father" section is all about though. This assumption does provide some context as to why Brian felt it should conclude the Wonderful Suite - though it can still work well with the Barnyard/Americana Suite as that one talks about the industrial era: a time where the wealthy would sport canes (batons) and attend the opera via carriage escorts. |

@[almcn82:22730] I saw this too! I'm glad I'm not the only one, and if these are indeed Brian's words then I am especially pleased. I always thought the last verse was about the narrator receiving newspapers, which are the "letters". This leads me to think that the song is about real people or news at the time, but that's as far as I get and I know it's lame. I like the Holocaust assessment because that one seems most concrete to me (not to discount the others, which I love for their high metaphor perspectives). I guess what I'm most curious about is if others feel the same way and if so who are these people? Because he does re-arrange their faces and gives them different names. |
