| Finch – What It Is To Burn Lyrics | 6 years ago |

The common theme of most of the songs in this album seem to be about being trapped somehow or somewhere, and trying to escape. In contrast, this song seems to be about acceptance: that there is no escape, so we may as well embrace it and move on. I'm not suggesting this is a Christian album at all (I'm an athiest myself), but I believe the album is about being trapped in hell or purgatory; with the final song ultimately about accepting one's place... Maybe even that the concepts of hell and heaven don't exist, and what one may describe as hell is actually just one perspective on events. If we consider "her" to be hell, it adds a different meaning to the chorus: "Like a bad star, I'm falling faster down to her... She's the only one who knows what it is to burn" There are also elements of being a fallen angel; maybe even the devil himself (the devil crops up in their next album, that there is no sympathy for the devil when God gave him wings). |

I'm surprised it isn't mentioned here, but Bellamy has been quoted as saying this song is a sequel to the brilliant "Citizen Erased". Interestingly, the structure of the song itself seems to be a mirror of that from "Citizen Erased"... Leading beautifully on when played consecutively; an epic that clocks in at almost 20 minutes. That being said, the lyrics would be just as in place on any Muse album, with general themes of revolution, betrayal and destruction of humanity. Also, when taken as a whole with Citizen Erased, it shows us the path those with the best intentions end up taking in becoming the very kind of dictator they hated. Che Guevara, Fidel Castro and Cuba spring to mind; where these influential figures successfully revolted against an oppressive government, only to become one in itself. Even Marx I have no doubt had the best intentions, unaware that the battle between capitalism and communism would lead the world to the brink of destruction. |

It seems quite easy to interpret the likely meaning of these lyrics when you see them in front of you; the rise of fundamentalism and Isis Terrorism; The things people across the west say such as "Islam being a religion of war", leaders publically calling for a ban on Islamic immigration. These people are likened in the song to the bees, a species of insect largely peaceful unless their home is threatened. We have drone strikes authorised seemingly daily, causing untold loss and pain to families across the middle east ("collateral damage"), and yet almost comically seem confused when a handful of people from these communities want to get their own back. Before actually reading the full lyrics, I considered the themes from what I could hear to possibly be about rape or karma... For some reason, it reminded me a little of Nirvana's Polly. |
