I love the far more artistic interpretations. And possibly there’s a duality in the lyrics to be taken different ways. Sadly, for me, this song has always been about the terrifying moments where you’re trying to do the right thing, but this might be the one time you get to open up to someone about your feelings for them… all while dreading that even mentioning them risks rejection and also kind of being an asshole (because the subject of affection isn’t really feeling too great). I guess my interpretation hinges on the lines, “Time to wager all, to wager all.,.” |

I’m not sure what the assassins are, but it’s definitely an ache reminiscent of seeing your life as something fake, at least in the grand scheme of things. Maybe it’s our own projection of how others perceive us? It’s a performance. The side of ourselves we present to the dancing masses. They take in and enjoy themselves to our performing for them. Meanwhile our true hearts are hidden because we’re actually afraid of how we’ll be judged. We’re all waiting for this true self of ours to manifest and banish the shadow selves. Ultimately, this seems to be about a conflict between a true Self and there fake Self presented to the world. And that wish to be accepted and loved for who we actually are as opposed to the shadow play we put on for others in a melancholic hope for acceptance. |

To clarify/append, I think there’s a lot about teenage (male) adolescent insecurity. A mosquito refers overtly to male genitalia (but, to be fair, to female breasts) and the unhealthy obsession with size thereof that society pushes on teens (and adults, imo). There’s so much there about fear of potential rejection and posturing. Frankly, I think it’s universal. Wr |

We're here and looking for meaning, acceptance, and entertainment. In development, we fave tbe strictures of developmwnt, and we accept, rebel, and then accept accept again -- all without fully underatanding why. It's the youth in the face of the world. Remember how it felt back then, wanting to beling and wanting to revel -- wanting to change the world, and wanting to fond your place inthe crowd (all while denying that you were looking for acceptance). And, had he been older when he released it, my guess is that he'd say it chronicles the ultimate rise and defeat of hope and youthful ideals. |

@[MrSwindler:29706] I don’t know, the content seemed to be explicitly clear to me — the world gets us down; especially for those of us in the privileged countries who can see how shitty humanity is to itself. To me, a black hole sun is one that starts the world over again. One that obliterated humanity’s sins (in both an individual and human-encompassing level) by destroying it all. However, I really appreciate your references, since it seems to imply that there’s an added meaning to the destruction: the world is being wished into destruction such that a better one can take its place. I wouldn’t have considered that meaning of the song without your comment; so thank you. Granted, ultimately, it’s a condemnation of humanity. One that Chris recently confirmed through his own actions. (May he RIP.) |

The songwriter is writing about attempting to find salvation in their soul/self in the face of loss. Yes, it’s about faith but not in any dogmatic way-the singer is looking for some kind of relief or joy (possibly because they’ve been instructed that they should and that this patj is intrinsic to happiness), But they’ve been denied- at least as we humans understand it. “The sun is falling again” underscores the indefatigably loss of hope, confusion, fear, etc., in the face of loss of faith ... not necessarily in the Christian God, but any promise or person or hope. |

Everyone speaks of romantic or theological love... but maybe the song is about both, neither, and other? Perhaps the song is about aspiration, about a hero - about anyone that can be loved in any way. The desire to be good enough, to learn, to fulfill the promise of anyone who inspires you? To live in the example, to be guided by, to achieve a “grace” of anyone you “worship” (quotes because I mean in any sense of the word). In fact, I think the strength of this song is how it means God, authors/songwriters/philosophers,, and loved ones (romantic |
