Such a beautiful song, all about changes in the world and within Lana herself. From Lana during a magazine interview: "[...] Something has to change in the world. In the first verse, I sing 'there’s something in the wind, I can feel it blowing in', and in the second verse I sing that it’s 'on the wings of a song'. When I express my thoughts about change through lyrics and music, it can be about North Korea launching missiles or whatever, but it can also be directed inwards." ---- 'Lately I've been thinking it's just someone else's job to care/Who am I to sympathize when no one gave a damn?' - With everything going on in the world, it can get to feel overwhelming, and as if you are powerless. If others don't care or aren't trying to make a change, then why should you?... 'Change is a powerful thing/People are powerful beings/Trying to find the power in me to be faithful' -- ...Nonetheless, Lana is trying her best to keep faith in others and remain hopeful. 'Maybe by the time this song is done I'll be able to be honest, capable of holding you in my arms without letting you fall when I don't feel beautiful or stable/Maybe it's enough to just be where we are because everytime that we run, we don't know what it's from/Now we finally slow down, we feel close to it' -- Lana stated in an interview that "honest, capable, beautiful and stable" shape the image of who she wants to become. When she says "we" in these lines, I feel as though she is having a conversation with herself. From Lana in the same interview: "In the second verse I make it personal, when it’s about being stable, strong, and secure, and not looking for new discoveries when I don’t even have my shit together." 'There's something in the water/I can taste it turning sour/It's bitter, I'm coughing/But now it's in my blood' -- In my opinion, these are the lyrics that are the most unclear in the song. Perhaps the water refers to being in a pure or childlike state, but then the negativities and realities of life "turn it sour." As you become older and more aware of the world, you become somewhat bitter towards others and the world, and it's hard to shake the feeling, as though it's in your blood. 'There's a change gonna come/I don't know where or when/But whenever it does, we'll be here for it' -- Despite uncertainties and negative things happening in the world and within ourselves, we must always look for a positive change on the horizon. We don't know where it will come, or when, but we need to hold onto hope that we'll be here to witness it. |

Lana has stated that she made this album for her fans. I interpret the first single off the album, "Love," as an ode to Millennials, who make up a large chunk of her fanbase. "Look at you kids with your vintage music Comin' through satellites while cruisin'" This verse and the next line give a nod to Millennials being referred to as "the generation of nostalgia." I picture a group of friends driving down the road listening to old, vintage music on their smartphones via the internet, via satellites up in space. "You're part of the past, but now you're the future Signals crossing can get confusing" On one hand, Millennials are the last generation to have memories of existing in the world without computers, the internet, smartphones, etc., yet they are the first generation to grow up with and master these pieces of technology at fairly young ages - Millennials are partly past, partly future. On the other hand, trends that we thought were buried in history are re-emerging in the present day; the world is struggling with intensifying racism, there are anxieties of a nuclear war, America in particular is in a very fragile political state. The past is repeating itself, but as Millennials are growing up, they will be in positions of power to change sad things going on in the world. "Seen so much, you could get the blues But that don't mean that you should abuse it Though it's enough just to make you go crazy, crazy, crazy" Millennials are becoming adults amidst the terrible things I mentioned above, but they were exposed to tragedies at young ages, as well. Growing up with horrible things seemingly being "the norm" (terrorist attacks, mass shootings) is enough to make anyone get the blues and feel crazy, but you can't give up. We need to keep going and do what we can to improve the world. One last note - I think the line "young and in love" can mean more than love in the romantic sense. When you're young, you feel as though the world is yours, and there are endless possibilities that await you. Perhaps by being "young and in love," Lana means being in love with the potential that the world holds, or simply just showing love in general to a world that needs more of it. |

Mixing the two general ideas presented so far...what if the man is infatuated or in love with a porn star? "Somebody killed me/And tore out my heart, my love/Somebody killed me/Because of you" - Perhaps his lover left him because they were fed up with the man's porn addiction or infatuation with the pornographic actress. I do agree that there is a feeling of sadness and longing invoked by the music. The man is aware that his admiration is foolish, harmful, and pathetic ("Images of heaven take me to hell" - hell could be interpreted as a feeling of anger, sadness, etc. or literal Hell due to sin) but he simply cannot help how he feels ("And there's nothing I can do"). He is aware that the woman is simply an actress in front of the camera and the "real woman" the camera doesn't capture may be someone completely different, yet he is in love with the media-made version of her anyway. ("The camera made you/There's nothing I can do/'Cause you don't exist"). All he has are his Images of Heaven. |
