I love acceptance for their sonics (Eric’s voice, etc…) Lyrically it’s catchy but empty. The song is about hatdly anything. . He’s leaving, n telling whoever that they do not to have to follow. That’s the message. We don’t get much interpretation at all. I still LOVE this band. But if a band has nothing to say, we get this, no message. This songs a banger tho. Us Songwriters have to dig deep and find what we have to say. It’s usually internal conflicts written in metaphors n I am a songwriter, I have no idea that the song is about me until other pple tell me it is. They relate (if it’s well written and authentic) interpret what my lyrics are saying, n I figure out what’s true n what’s subjective. Both truth (objective) n subjective are correct in art. |

Song meaning: Control of course. This song says a lot. 20 years ago I thought it was about organized religion, government, illegitimate authority. All could be correct but now, I see it a little differently on an individual level. I am all too familiar with people trying to control. My interpretation is my own, how I feel it. 1. Live the life you want to live, not the life someone told you to live, and is no smarter than you. 2. Don’t buy into society’s BS otherwise you will become disposable by treating yourself as a finite product. I am personally not for sale and I have to make this very clear to certain people in life. 3. Thee one and only thing we can control is finding out who we truly are, and what we are truly meant to become. No one is to tell us who we are, or what our purpose is, they don’t have that right, ignore that nonsense. Life is a trial and error process for most, but the answers will eventually come. Let’s talk about this bridge. I picture it like a manager telling an employee there’s an ORDER (keyword), n that they’ll soon learn who’s the boss, like a subtle threat. Order is synonymous with Control. There is no specific order to grow on. We all have our own paths that we can find and create, mine doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. The thing I love about these lyrics is that it never points the finger, bc a lot of us do this to ourselves. We buy in, maybe allow ourselves to be tamed, thinking we’re wild animals. We’re not. Maybe We don’t stand our ground, possibly from fear. And what is fear? I’ll skip the acronym. Fear is a product, a tool used for CONTROL. |

It sounds like the lyricist is done with fighting in this current political environment especially when he mentions he has a little baby. He can’t keep his hands off her. his hands used to be for fighting, now they’re purpose is to care for his child. He puts them on a shelf in case he needs to protect her. The chorus is almost making fun of SJWs when he mentions the 1960s which was the Vietnam protests, civil rights for blacks. Those were actually something to fight for politically. Now, we just complain about the corrupt system we’re apart of. People are now just a rebel for the fun of it. I really like the bridge bc it shows hypocrisy of war. Give up ur hopes n dreams. N it also seems like “stop flipping for the enemies” could be the smear campaign the corporations use to not allow minimum wage to go up to 15 dollars. “Flipping” could literally mean flipping burgers. and it sounds like he’s giving a nod to Sander’s tip to the middle kids (college debt) and Trumps famous wall. N then he says it doesn’t bother him either way. Let the wall fall down by being peaceful or fight a bullshit political war. we truly know we’re not under attack and we don’t need a wall to feel safe from immigrants. The “1986” reference reminds me of the first line to “fight for your right” by the beastie boys which is “KICK IT”. I could be way off but I’m the same age as the members of Portugal the man. I still can’t believe they’re on the radio. They deserve it. |
