| To me, there are more than enough signs and references to depression. What has been racking my brain is if the lyrics represent what he says to himself in his head? Or is this someone speaking to him. Maybe his father? | |

So based off of what Andy Hull has briefly explained, it's obviously about a complicated relationship. It's a beautiful song because it unravels the relationship in stages which is a unique way to approach an experience such as that. Most songs focus one aspect of a relationship being lust, pain, happiness, etc but this song captures all of it as it were to be read like a story book. It's amazing to see the switch In who he defines as his fiancé. How at first, she is reluctant, uncommitted, and most likely filled with doubts about them together and her commitment. As time goes on, he shows his patience and personal pain which he most likely kept completely to himself as he watches her leave then slowly come around again. She seems to have a change of heart towards him but it took a significant amount of time and contemplation. It leaves the listener with the mystery of what she had to go through alone without him to realize that in the end she really did love him all along. "And confessedly this is the first time I've loved you, and god I mean it, I swear that I mean it." This song strikes home to me because I first got into Manchester orchestra when I was in high school because my girlfriend introduced me to them. That became our favorite song together and ironically, as I look back, we were going through the same situation all along. We broke up after 2 years of dating and then took a break for two years and now we are engaged. I know this isn't a place to express your stupid life but I love this song because it struck me at multiple levels. |
