This isn't exactly an 'interpretation' but for some reason, this song bring the image of an old castle on a hillside to my mind. I think it's the way the cello is used which is really perfect for this song. But certainly the reference is to the old 8-ball toy (do they still make those? I wonder). But I remember them from my childhood - it was a weird kind of toy though....I think this song is sort of reminiscent of childhood in some manner - like a "where did the time go?" sort of song. It's beautiful regardless - as so many Meat Puppets songs are! They seem to like juxtaposing conflicting or even contradicting ideas. A lot of irony goes on....for example: "You're so special / I don't like you / you will always be my only friend"....good stuff - makes for interesting listening! |

| Syd Barrett – Octopus Lyrics | 8 years ago |
| I had heard this song in many 'states' of 'consciousness' including (many times) complete sobriety. I think it's a wonderful song. One comment of mine is that I always heard the line as "Drip, drip to a dream dragon", Not "Trip, Trip" (it's a subtle difference phonetically, and neither 'version' makes much sense really), but I dislike it profoundly when people dismiss songs like this to be merely about 'drugs' (which is just stupid - drugs are nothing until they're taken and then, once taken, there's so many variables, that to think one could encapsulate that experience in a word like 'drugs' is so ludicrous, that it could almost be considered an attack on humanity in the sense that the 'word' becomes more important and meaningful than the person and their experience. There are so many things in language (English is the only spoken or written language I have any sort of handle on) that are like this where people show their ignorance of their own lives by using words like 'drugs' so flippantly that it becomes sad that they're so unwittingly revealing their own lack of humanity or willingness to truly understand anything (if one could consider the instance of misusing the word 'drugs' in this way as an example of everything that goes in and out of their brain). I would truly feel sorry for these sort of people if there weren't so many of them and the arrogance that this sort of 'thinking' engenders within them. But as Kerog (?) as played by Phil Hartman often said: " But what do I know, I'm just a caveman, your world frightens and confuses me!" LMFAO!! And as Salvador Dali was quoted as saying "People should no do drugs, people should BE drugs!" - Dali was quite an insightful man (IMHO). I am thankful that such interesting things as "Octopus" have been recorded for such thought, speculation and enjoyment. It's such that should increase the listener's humanity if the listener is willing and able (this doesn't always happen right away - but can - and speaking as someone who has experienced that first-hand - it's quite remarkable). | |
