Arcade Fire – Creature Comfort Lyrics 8 years ago
I think people are reading too closely into the mentions of suicide in this song. Creature comfort is anything that takes away pain. The pain of having/thinking you had a rough childhood and resenting your parents because of it, the pain of not being attractive by societal standards, etc. - eased by creature comforts.

Suicide can be creature comfort, as it takes away that pain (among other things..), but not all comforts are suicide. People take pills, try to do things to themselves to look more "attractive", etc. It's all in the name of making yourself feel less bad about life.

The song addresses the pain we feel, what we do to mask the pain, and then through lyrics like "born in a diamond mine, it's all around you but you can't see it" the band tells us that there's a world of wonderful things surrounding us and yet, because society perpetually enforces itself upon us, we can't see the good.

"God make me famous, if you can't, just make it painless"

I don't believe fame really is the end game imagined here, as much as just being "perfect". Society tells us we need to have everything to be happy: nice house/car/perfect body (if not, buy x product to look better!) and when we inevitably can't live up to this, we seek creature comfort to "manage" our pain.

I don't think the band wants to come across as too preachy, but they are telling us to not let society/consumerism dictate our happiness and that we should try to instead focus on the good - because despite all of the bad, this is still probably the best time to be alive in the history of mankind.
