| Pantera – I'm Broken Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| The meaning of the song is clear from an interview by phil. He said its about his severe back pain and how it made him feel. Broken and weak, and painfully aware of his own mortality. So basically the verses are talking about having a fear of death | |

I think it's a reference to christianity. The girl hes in love with wont ever be his because shes "married" to the house carpenter- jesus, the carpenters son... Shes religious and because of his issues with religion she wont be with him even though she loves him |

| The Doors – Riders On The Storm Lyrics | 5 years ago |

This song is about life in general and taking a very philosophical approach to it. The first verse describes how we come into this world without purpose or guidance, like a dog without a bone or an actor out of work, no one really seems to have a clear straightforward path or purpose in life. The second verse talks about the dangers in life; death is lurking around every corner in the form of a serial killer, like ed kemper or ted Bundy. We spend our lives avoiding the dangers and trying to make ourselves and our loved ones feel happy and not scared; "take a long holiday, let your children play". The third verse is about how society functions: considering how crazy and hostile this world is, we humans have banded together and found a way to survive. It all depends on love; we fall in love, get jobs, get a house, get married, have kids, why? Because if we dont then our race dies out and everything was pointless. But if we do then our life never ends; our genetic material keeps living on forever. It all depends on us individually. It can be a hard theme to understand if you break every lyric down too much, you have to look at the big picture and realize the song is about what life is all about, trying to be happy and go as long as we can without dying while trying to find some meaning in a crazy, crazy, mad, mad, mad world... |

| Tool – 7empest Lyrics | 6 years ago |

This song is about people who deceive others into a false sense of security, trying to lull people to sleep by explaining away the signs of a coming tempest as coincidence. Almost every person in control of this world does it- the status quo is king right? No need to worry, business as usual. Keep praying, keep working, keep voting and everything will be ok. Just make sure to give your dues to society (aka make us rich by being an ignorant dumbass). But as Maynard says, the lies will all be revealed when the tempest finally comes and washes everything away |

| Hurt – House Carpenter Lyrics | 8 years ago |
| The poem thing is interesting, but I still think that it's just inspiration. I think that the Sailor is the guy from rapture, the girl is the one who killed the baby. And Jesus is the house Carpenter. So because she killed herself for Jesus, she's married to her house Carpenter and her love will never be the sailor's. | |

I have a theory that both albums, hurt vol 1 and 2, are together a concept double album. Shallow is something of an introductory song, him talking to the girl he likes who seems shallow. We all know that Rapture is about a young couple, the same boy and girl as in shallow, who fell in love. Their love was viewed as forbidden by her parents, so they eloped and had a kid. But the girl was crazy, and she thought she heard Jesus tell her to kill the baby (and possibly herself as well). This is actually something that has happened before, I remember reading it in a news story. Anyway, the next song is Overdose. Which is the same guy who's girlfriend and baby both died in a tragedy in Rapture. He gets addicted drugs to be able to cope with the pain. In Falls Apart he looks back at how his life has, because of drugs and tragedy, well- fallen apart. In Forever, he's talking to a different girl. There's a part where he says things from this new girls perspective (tell me a story about your life, I don't mind). She's trying to get him to open up, but it always hurts when it's someone you love. Fast forward to Unkind and Losing, which are both about this new girl who apparently got him to open up to her, but betrayed his trust and cheated on him. He hates her cause she's unkind. Danse Russe (Russian Dance) Is about that same new girl. She helped heal his pain by being there (chase my ghosts from me). But then she left. He just wants her to come back (float on over, I just need to feel you breathe). Dirty is about how he tried to be like jesus when he was a boy, but as a teen he traded Religion for the first girl who ended up ruining his life. It references Overdose (taken aspirin for my pain, empty bottles seem to say it). He just wishes his life was better (I'd trade it all for just one touch). Cold Inside is pretty self explanatory, his depression hits rock bottom. House carpenter is the most interesting song, I think it's still referencing the first girl. The guy is the sailor and Jesus is the house carpenter (which fits cause in the bible jesus was the carpenter's son). Because she killed herself and her baby for Jesus, she's "married to her house carpenter" and her love will never be the sailor's- the original guy. But that's just a theory. I'll have to work on my theory of the second album and how it fits in. |

| Tool – H. Lyrics | 8 years ago |

So I've been stewing on this song for a few years now (ever since i first got into tool, this has been one of my favorite of their songs), and i think I'm ready to give my interpretarion, which is sure to be unnecessarily long-winded. No question this song is about his son at least, perhaps his entire family at the time (i believe his then wife was breña). Based on Maynards previous interviews, the H stands for devo's middle name, as others have already stated. The entire song is loaded with imagery. But everything has a meaning, no matter how simple. My interpretation is based on something maynard said in concert in '96 to introduce this song. Straight from wikipedia: "Any of you ever seen those old Warner Bros. cartoons? Sometimes there's that one where the guy is trying to make a decision, and he's got an angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other. Seems pretty obvious, right? The angel is trying to give him good advice while the devil is trying to get him to do what's bad for him. It's not always that simple, though. A lot of times they're not really angels or devils, but friends giving you advice, looking out for your best interest but not really understanding what's going to be best for you. So it kind of comes down to you. You have to make the decision yourself. This song is called 'H.' -MJK himself So using that quote as a framework, let's break down the song in the classic line by line style. "What's coming through is alive What's holding up is a mirror But what's singing songs is a snake Looking to turn this piss to wine" This is very important. These first four lines are describing each side of his shoulder: one side is a mirror that's alive, a reflection of himself- in my opinion, it makes sense that that's devo: a living mirror of maynard. The other side is a snake that is looking to turn his piss into wine, i.e. a somewhat more nefarious side that's trying to turn a bad situation good. "They're both totally void of hate But killing me just the same" But we have to remember what maynard says, neither side is inherently good or bad, they both care about maynard. According to this line, theyre also simultaneously doing him harm. "The snake behind me hisses What my damage could have been My blood before me begs me Open up my heart again" So the snake is whispering what his damage could have been: how badly he could be hurt. This is integral to my theory of who or what the snake represents. In my mind, its not his abuser, but rather, his defense mechanism against abuse. All those repressed feelings of hate and angst from being abused as a young boy in ohio created a snake-like defense mechanism in maynard that whispers at him whenever he gets too close to someone, reminding him of the danger, the possible damage. On the opposite side is his blood before him- his son- begging him to open up his heart and emotionally connect- which is the exact thing the snake is telling him NOT to do. Ironic. "And I feel this coming over like a storm again Considerately" So whenever his son and wife or anyone else is tugging at him to open up emotionally, that snake is whispering and hissing at maynard, and he feels all those feelings from the past well up and start killing him inside: condsiderately, mind you. "Venomous voice, tempts me Drains me, bleeds me Leaves me cracked and empty Drags me down like some sweet gravity" The snake is tempting him, draining him, dragging him down: encouraging him to draw inside and away from everyone else. Cut himself off to keep from being hurt. "I am too connected to you to Slip away, to fade away Days away I still feel you Touching me, changing me And considerately killing me" But at the same time he knows that he's too connected to his family so slip away, and so he won't leave them. But being around them is still killing him inside, because it reminds him of his own abuse. "Without the skin Beneath the storm Under these tears The walls came down" As he's being battered around by the storm of repressed feelings seeping out of his subconscious, he finally finds the strength inside to make his own decision and brings the emotional walls down. "And the snake is drowned and As I look in his eyes My fear begins to fade Recalling all of those times I could have cried then I should have cried then And as the walls come down and As I look in your eyes My fear begins to fade Recalling all of the times I have died And will die It's all right I don't mind" The metaphorical storm of emotions floods out into this dreamscape and the snake- the defense mechanism that he had long since outgrown- is drowned in the torrent. As he looks in it's eyes, his fear of emotional commitment fades. He remembers the times he should have cried- the times he should have been emotionally available for his family, and uses that regret to break down his walls. As he looks in his family's eyes, he remembers all the times he almost died from the abuse of his biological father, and makes his peace with it. He no longer minds. I am too connected to you to Slip away, to fade away Days away I still feel you Touching me, changing me And considerately killing me So he knows the truth- that he is too connected to the ones he loves to allow them to slip away because of his own past. That's my opinion, anyway. |
