I've always thought the song is about weed. Sweet Jane, Mary Jane, marijuana. The banker and the clerk, people wealthy and those not, save their money and come home and get high. Jack in a corset and janey in a vest to me are gays and lesbians. Back in the 70s, i remember lesbians in sweater vests like guys used to wear. The 70s had some very peculiar fashions compared to other generations. Drag queens, corsets. To me it's nothing so deep as someothers have said. Its just a song about how everyone likes to come home from work and have a little sweet jane. |
