R.E.M. – Daysleeper Lyrics 1 year ago
@Seizurebleak Ocean machine is one of those boxes that generate "soothing" sounds to mask other background noises. He is turning it up full blast to allow him to sleep through all the inevitable daytime noises.

But I agree that this is simply a song about struggling with a punishing and unnatural work schedule. I lasted about three months before I became desperate to find a different job.

Aimee Mann – Red Vines Lyrics 2 years ago
This song is sung from the perspective of a wise-beyond-her-years teenage girl, observing her divorced mother and her latest suitor. That couple is still in the early days of their relationship, but the daughter sees clearly that the relationship is doomed. Despite the guy's best efforts (chasing fireflies, buying candy for the kids), he does not have what her mother needs (perhaps economic stability, or other factors) - all he has to offer is cheap distractions/vices like licorice and cigarettes.

My impression is that the daughter has seen this play out before - she is sympathetic to this new guy, but knows he is headed for rejection. Hence her advice to "not blame yourself".

In the meantime, she watches the relationship play out to its unhappy conclusion "on the sidelines, with my hands tied, watching the show".

The Fall – New Big Prinz Lyrics 5 years ago
I really have no idea what most of The Fall's songs are about, but somehow I think this song is about John Peel. High priest of rock disc jockeys with a long "track record"...
