Blue Öyster Cult – Mes Dames Sarat Lyrics 4 years ago
About the title. Sarat translates from Romanian to English as Salty. First, Romanian? Vlad Dracula, aka the Impaler, who dined among his dying victims and allegedly dipped his bread in their blood, rumored to be the model for Count Dracula, was of course from Romania. Second, salt had been revered in Medieval times as a purification material. Thirdly, Porphyria, aka vampire disease, is an inherited blood disease with no known cure. Skin of Porphyria sufferers when exposed to prolong sunlight can develop lesions, and some symptoms of Porphyria can be temporarily relieved by ingesting blood. Important to the song, and according to WebMD "The symptoms of acute porphyria can form quickly and last for days or weeks. A salt imbalance sometimes accompanies an episode of this type of porphyria." Now none of this is intended to cast aspersions on the victims of porphyria which must be a dreadful disease and I wish them all the understanding we can muster. The references are made to simply place some understanding about the legends which may espouse juvenile and wrongheaded notions about the several scientific oddities combined in history.

The lyrics lead me to believe The Ladies Sarat are some form of succubus which may or may not be being tracked by a demon hunter in the last stanza.

Alice in Chains – I Stay Away Lyrics 5 years ago
I hate to break it to you all but this song has nothing to do with Viet Nam. It's actually Cantrell's response to Primus' Big Brown Beaver song. You see, in late '68, Jerry was attacked by a big, brown beaver and as is to be expected it gave him nightmares causing him to dissociate for several hours until a team of psychiatrists from the Brookings Institute could convince him he was actually a giant rooster that had the power to defeat the beaver. In order to get Jerry's attention, they had to spit on him.

OF COURSE IT'S ABOUT VIET NAM, YOU WANKERS! OH, GEE, THANKS FOR YOUR INSIGHTFUL COMMENTS. I'VE NEVER READ SUCH PSEUDO-INTELLECTUAL CLAPTRAP IN ALL MY LIFE.

mm hhm. Sorry everyone. Just mad that no one ever wrote a song this good about Nicaragua, but since no one's supposed to talk about it, I guess no one ever will. Fuck you all, good night.

@[soulfreedom:27857] This song encourages suicide in the same way that Hegel and Nietzsche encouraged the Nazis. Weak-minded people are always looking for stronger intellects to justify their positions even if the inferences they draw from the stronger intellect are all wrong. If you want this song to be about suicide, then that's on you, and your expression of such an opinion is a sad commentary on your personal state of mind.

I have always seen these lyrics as a statement on immortality - not personal immortality, but the rise and fall of individuals in the face of the vast indifference of Nature whom by pushing past their personal fears are able to join the long litany of those who drive humanity toward a better place. The sadness and sting of Death is transcended through the realization that our physicality, this mortal coil, is made of Earth and must return to it; but that same Nature gave rise to an ego such as ours and thus it WILL in time give rise to an ego much like it again. I'm not sure if Buck and the artists herein took it that far, but I hold that my inferences contain much more honor than yours would allow.

Nonetheless, the song itself seems to be more of a statement on aspects of the literary character of Imaginos. I do wish you people would do your homework on the band. We're not talking the Beatles, Pink Floyd, or even the scholarly references of Iron Maiden here. The true genius of BOC is carrying an element of the Imaginos theme across several albums from songs such as Workshop of the Telescopes(BOC) and Mistress of the Salmon Salt(T&M) through Tattoo Vampire(AoF), the Great Sun Jester(Mirrors) and beyond.

Once you've completed your outlines, please feel free to amend your comments accordingly.

@[kennethQ77:27856] This song encourages suicide in the same way Nietzsche and Hegel encouraged the Nazis. Weak-minded people look for strong people who agree with them to justify their weakness in some way even if the inferences they make are all improperly drawn.

As far as your Pauline interpretations of the Anointed One's fears, I would suggest you stop looking at everything through your own fears of Death. You may be among the same group of pseudointellectual dilettantes who interpret Christ's uttering the words "Eloi, eloi, lama sabachthani" as God abandoning Himself on the Cross. My Lord was actually quoting the 22nd Psalm which foresaw the events leading to the Crucifixion. Perhaps if you would attempt to seek the deeper meaning of things, such as this song, you might see the world and it's slings and arrows are a façade and that the life to come for those who sought leads back to unity with the True Consciousness.

@[resotst:27855] A scholarly approach was much needed here. Thank you. My first thoughts were the same as yours especially in reference to the last verse. Nonetheless, the question remains is this an allusion to Imaginos being a vampire? With reference to Astronomy, we know of the immortal qualities of Imaginos. Perhaps the aforementioned woman is Miss Carrie or Suzie Dear. Perhaps Imaginos is not exactly a vampire, but something thereabouts thus giving rise to elements in Subhuman regarding transitions imposed by the Oyster boys, and Imaginos' psychic qualities as presented by Workshop of the Telescopes. The search continues.

This song is so obviously about transhumanism in the face of ontological pedagogy displayed in the light of Jungian pantheistic transubstantiation. It's such an obvious derivative of Mahler's work on kraftig-style symphonic repercussion.

Also it's about aliens.

Oh, gosh! I think you all are so grim about my Old Friend that you miss the meaning entirely. The song is about letting go of your petty little egos. The universe is infinite, and so is change. We come and go in our little meat suits, but others like us return. The song is addressing this simple reality, but there is no reason to fear. Enjoy the here and now; no need to go crazy partying or sink into depression, live life through its seasons. You are loved.
