This song reminds me so much of my ongoing situation with a women I intend to marry. We align closely in so many ways but there’s often an intangible boundary that prevents us from connecting at times that is very difficult to define. It manifests in misunderstanding and quickly progresses to hurt feelings. “You meant please dont let me go,” is a typical conversation for us and alcohol/thc(I was having a high time) has also played a role. It may be enough to keep us from being together though neither one of us wants that to happen. It is difficult to say least. I believe this song is about trust, or the lack thereof. She trusted him, he didn’t tend to her needs. I inagine the typical hard working turn of the century couple struggling to survive. The man works hard and times are tough but he’s still holding on to his dream of being able to provide the “high life” to his woman. She is forced to say goodbye though its not what she really feels. He has misunderstood her, it seems that him having a “high time” is somehow part of it. Seems possible that part of the reason he did not understand what she meant is because he was having a “high time.” She loves him but also has to work hard all the time too survive and it makes him embarrassed. He wants to show her the high times he dreams of but when he opens his mouth all that comes out is hard times. Life, especially for those that struggle economically, is never exactly what we want but in many cases leaves us struggling against something we don’t understand and often against those we care about. The need to share his “hard times” w her is understandable but gives her little comfort. He realizes she is unsure of their future because he has said too much, he tries to reassure her repeating his earlier hope of having high times with her. What a beautiful song. Its a waning American dream exposed by the hot sun on a muddy trail into San Francisco during the summer of 1931.
I like to think the couple is old Sherman Buck from Rodney Crowell’s California Earthquake Song and Delilah Jones from Brown Eyed Women. Those two could redifine the concept of “power couple”. Both have looked into the face of their maker and lived to tell about it. Timeless
