Like I said in the previous comment - this song is about the end of a toxic relationship with a narcissist. 'I'm not sure what I'm looking for anymore I just know that I'm harder to console" After ending a relationship with a narcissist, you have immediate trust issues with anyone. That's the main reason why people simply give up dating. "I don't see who I'm trying to be instead of me But the key is a question of control" A narcissist can literally strip your identity out of you and it is always about having control over you. If you can gain control by not being a supply to the narcissist, you don't get to sacrifice anything out of yourself. "Can you say what you're trying to play anyway I just pay while you're breaking all the rules" They always play mind games with you to gain your attention, A narcissist also enjoys getting away with violating rules and social norms. "All the signs that I find have been underlined Devils thrive on the drive that is fueled" The writer has seen all the signs he needs to see in order to know the person in question is a narcissist. Their needs for validation, attention and the actions they do to satisfy those needs can be pure evil which Devils thrive on. "All this running around, well it's getting me down Just give me a pain that I'm used to" This is one of the last things you should do when a narcissist tries to cut communication with you. You are discarded but you always feel like you want to learn the reason why. You wonder if you did something wrong and if not what is the problem? So you run around and chase them. I don't need to believe all the dreams you conceive You just need to achieve something that rings true When you confront them about the things that happened, they make you feel like you are insane. They twist the reality without completely changing it so well that you end up questioning your sanity. One of the things they do best is lying, and they lie so often. "There's a hole in your soul like an animal With no conscience, repentance, oh no" They have a "void" inside them that they feel like they can fill when they find a narcissistic supply. Although it never happens. Narcissists also lack empathy, and they do what they do because they are unable to feel the damage they cause to other people. They can even have joy or excitement about destroying someone's life as they see other people as nothing more than objects. "Close your eyes, pay the price for your paradise Devils feed on the seeds of the soul" Their "paradise" is the fake image of themselves, something they would try to protect no matter what. "I can't conceal what I feel, what I know is real No mistaking the faking, I care" Narcissists do something called gaslighting, which makes you question your reality and leave you confused. In order to counter that no matter what a narcissist tells you, you must stick to the facts, how they actually made you feel, and not lose touch with reality. Which is what is going on in this verse. They twist the reality so well that you can't help but to think maybe that is the case and the narcissist misunderstood you so there is a mistaking, but when you consider the reality of the situation you know everything they do is faking how they feel. "With a prayer in the air I will leave it there On a note full of hope not despair" It is time to heal after the damage is done to your well being. This song wasn't my favorite particularly because of the noise at the beginning and at the end of the song and I didn't have any idea what the lyrics meant until I experienced the lyrics word by word. Mr. Gore, you are an absolute treasure and I'm thankful to be in the same lifetime with you to listen to songs you wrote and this awesome band. |
