I believe this song is much more deep. This is not only a drug-empty-of-really-meaning song. It's much more about ideas, love and values and how you get hurt of them. It's scientific fact that love and ideas can act like drugs in brain releasing dopamine and all the good stuff we need to feel really nice. Dreams (about success etc), believes in ideas, friendships and love can not only act in brain as drugs, but also have effects on our lives, or even can lead to drug addiction ! (as we see in Aronofsky's movie "Requiem for a dream", where drugs and dreams goes together as a very bad coctail of chemistry !). The following lyric (and maybe the sad climate of the song, as refferences to lost childhood) is a big key to understand the song better. Keep it in mind . : "That's the price that we all pay And the value of destiny comes to nothing" This hurt can never end (pain of existence), as even if we stop believing in dreams, love and values. It's the time when "we're all grow up together" and we're living in a world "full of nothing" been afraid of each other. Then then drugs as money (or crack as someone mentioned here that it was referenced at the original lyric) comes, falling in a loop... "full of nothing". This song is a life lesson ! Really happiness can be in faith in believes, love and other good values even if they hurt ! Else you get a first-seat ticket to a trip "full of nothing". |

This song is definitely about cold war. First of all -- the video. A counfused guy dressed formally, looking for evidences (spy) while dancing with black-dressed people (danger of death by missile crisis), trying to fix some techonological equipment to play some tapes (tech race during cold war). It's all about time... time... time... who gets first to space? who gets first to moon? who travels faster?. The sound of trains at 1:20 and Sputnik sattelite at 1:30 makes me absolutely sure. Ofcourse, that remains always a personal opinion... Thus the song starts dynamicaly (beggining of cold war after USA bombing Japan), during the middle becomes more "pathetic" (Kruschev's-Brezhnev's Era) and at the ending becomes again dynamicaly just like in the beggining (War in Afghanistan, Perestroika, Dissolution of USSR...). |
