Avantasia – Forever is a Long Time Lyrics 8 years ago
The basis of the Wicked Trilogy album is about music composer dubbed The Scarecrow (Tobias Sammet) slowly going insane. His insanity births Mephistopheles (Jorn Lande) in his mind, and he falls into depression after being rejected by his unrequited love (Amanda Somerville). Tobi wrote this trilogy so The Scarecrows teeters between reality and illusions; that line being clearer in some songs more than others.

----------------------

Following Crestfallen in which The Scarecrow reached a new low, I believe Mephistopheles is trying to pick him up a bit while also bringing him back under control by telling him to tone back his dreams.

The Scarecrow keeps defying "his devil", but isn't actually striving to get better. Whether feeling pleasure or pain, he's trying to move forward. He does seem to be sobering up by saying his "fairy tail's over".

Mephistopheles continues to try to persuade The Scarecrow by saying "forever is a long time" to be defying him, and that the pain he feels is a result of him hesitating to take up Mephistopheles' "salvation".

The beginning of his descent to madness, The Scarecrow begins hearing a second voice in his head. This is explained in the 2nd paragraph where Tobi starts speaking more harshly with lines like:

* "There's a voice and a million answers
To the questions I don't ask
A demon — I've got to contain"

Mephistopheles begins picking at The Scarecrow's insecurities in order to make him fall into depravity. He does this by talking about how The Scarecrow is different from everyone else and how the world tries to bring him down (referenced in Twisted Mind).

I believe the bridge represents the calm before the storm. The tranquility of The Scarecrow's mind before Mephistopheles begins invading it.

The rest of the song is The Scarecrow's mind starting to crack from the voices in his head, while Mephistopheles begins to tear at The Scarecrows biggest insecurity: his unrequited love.

My interpretation of the chorus is that it's The Scarecrow trying to console himself and give himself hope. However, the final chorus is when it's clear that Mephistopheles is beginning to affect The Scarecrow.

Avantasia – Runaway Train Lyrics 8 years ago
The basis of the Wicked Trilogy album is about music composer dubbed The Scarecrow (Tobias Sammet) slowly going insane. His insanity births Mephistopheles (Jorn Lande) in his mind, and he falls into depression after being rejected by his unrequited love (Amanda Somerville). Tobi wrote this trilogy so The Scarecrows teeters between reality and illusions; that line being clearer in some songs more than others.

----------------------

This song is about The Scarecrow listening to Mephistopheles and deciding to fall into addiction to escape his pain. This is explained in lines like:

* "Even better gotta get away, get away
Time to pick my poison".

The "runaway train" is meant to represent how The Scarecrow is ready to give up his self-control and spiral out of control in order to drown everything out. Lines such as:

* "Take a train to ecstasy"

* "If coming back would hurt my pride,
I'd rather take another ride"

* "If I'll awake in pain one day,
I've gotta catch just one more train"

As well as the chorus, further reinforce this analogy.

While it's unclear if the Mentor is real or a hallucination, his lines talk about how one day The Scarecrow will sober up and realize all the horrible things he's done, and once that happens he'll "scream repenting".
