| Belle & Sebastian – Fox in the Snow Lyrics | 7 years ago |

Songs take on new meaning as they travel with us through life and how we experience it. The fox, the girl, boy and kid are all one, dimensions of a person with potential depth, but is lost to shallow desperation. For me, this song is about the narcissistic intafamous, the self proclaimed instagram model. She’s lost all direction and creativity, “Before you hang a right And disappear from sight,” Chasing her tail, the fox has stopped feeding her mind and soul. It’s easy attention, as the girl becomes increasingly brash and trashy and easy to spot, like a fox in the snow. The fox is starving and needs to keep feeding her narcissism. Like a boy on a bike, she rides aimlessly. She runs around and her life is being driven by her next post. “It’s time to take a holiday,” from her addiction to attention. It’s not a professional model shoot- it’s unpaid, pay to play even. “You're going up, you're going down. You're going nowhere. It's not as if they're paying you.” Likewise, the girl in the snow is the woman losing all maturity. “To tell someone all the truth before it kills you They listen to your crazy laugh,” her hashtags full of quasi indirects and poor attempts at humor, reveal she’s losing her sanity. The kid in the snow is the instagram model, hitting her mid life crisis hard. She’s aged, is losing her natural youthful beauty. However, the cross fit gym culture is giving her a last crack at being hot. Cosmetics, good angles and strong Instagram filters fuel her selfie addiction. She says she still feels just like a kid, hashtagging #whenyourentirewardrobeisfromthejuniorsdepartment but in actuality, it’s train wreck: he’s embarrassed as she acts out her mid life crisis publicly. “Kid in the snow, way to go It only happens once a year It only happens once a lifetime Make the most of it Second just to being born Second to dying too What else would you do? What else would you do? What else would you do? What else would you do?” I love the repeated verse of “What else would you do?” The imagery emotes her insanity and desperation. Finally, the man singing knew her once before she spiraled into what she’s become. His weepy style of voice exudes sadness, loss and disappointment. He’s outside looking in and no longer relates to her. His connection with her is gone, and she’s has lost her mind to narcissism false fame on instagram. What else would you do? |

Song lyrics are often inspired in literal experience, but great songs and stories are usually a reflection in the past, where the author feels a metaphor with experience in the present. Literally, the 15 year old boy just about to come of age, is so appealing to the older women, yet still taboo. So we see here her reason for desire, a fantasy and a longing, not acted upon. However, the little story translates into other such attractions. Any younger man and older woman - she loves his smile and wants to be in his world, as an escape, a do-over or a broadening of experience. The smooth already more than enough .. it's a conflict of sexuality: a woman wishing she was his everything, yet the young man is bisexual, so she will never be. The older woman wants to experience this new world he's opening her to but there's still some sadness and frustration which will always be. We get the mood of passion, longing, attraction but also a temporary transience to it all. This is not a happily ever after story. It's angst and desire, somewhat explained. |
