Opeth – Still Day Beneath The Sun Lyrics 7 years ago
This song is referring to the death of someone and the thoughts which accompany their passing.

"The light that hits the gloom around," is the light from the presence of their life as it fades away. A light extinguished.
"The footprints 'round this grave," are the paths of men who have walked along these roads before. Perhaps in reference to the road of life.
"Dried up roses scattered on the mound," refers to the fact that even the symbolic plants intended to honor of one's life dry up and are carried away by the wind themselves. This life and their remembrance too shall pass.

"Will ever the morning carry away, the souls..." is one pondering the meaning of this existence. If the souls of those remembered transcend the bounds of this earthly mortality, or fade into nothingness.

"Binding, unwinding," binding their life into one's memory, until the passing of time unwinds the memory until it is but a shadow of the vibrant image it once was.

CHORUS: "wondering who is the one," another question of existential angst. Who among us will be the next to depart from this life? "And when the day is late," is in reference not to the cycles of day and night, but the lateness of one's life. Others can often see a person's embarkation upon the road of demise and the eternity or lack of in which will soon be their destination.

And the final melody is mostly a literal declaration of a funeral service, except for the final line, "sleeping 'neath the ground is me." This is the final reference to one's own melancholy existential worries. Although at this point in time one is only observing the body of another in the grave, he/she knows that soon it will be them lying there.

The sad and beautiful guitar melodies serve to accentuate this overall theme. A combined feeling of sadness, beauty at the light shined upon the gloom from a life, acceptance of one's own temporary state of being, and the worry and questioning surrounding the nature of one's death. A true work of art.

Opeth – Death Whispered a Lullaby Lyrics 7 years ago
This song is about how death comes for all. The men returning trying to find peace in this life will eventually fall into an everlasting sleep. Death is lulling them soothingly into the void.

There are shadows moving in the foggy realms of this world, yet in the end are meaningless. Death tells them not to fear the unknown, as they will one day rest to sleep for the last time in his embrace.

The last melody is the most straightforward. All of the events and memories of your life eventually amount to nothing more than a sweet dream which comes and goes and is forgotten. The world will crumble, the moon, which is the light in the darkness, will fade from one’s eyes as sleep takes over for the last time. “Death whispers a lullaby”

Beautiful and haunting lyrics from Wilson and Åkerfeldt

Chris Cornell – Dead Wishes Lyrics 7 years ago
This is about the cycle of life and death. In life we have desires and wishes which become our drive, our motivation to face all the difficulties in our day to day lives. Without these things may appear futile and meaningless. “Trying to find a part of me that’s still alive.”

Chris was not a young man when writing these lyrics. “Summer turns to autumn, winter turns to spring. And it all flies by...” He had seen the compilation of experiences people call memory, and how quickly a face or an image of joy or sorrow can become lost in the sands of time.

The chorus: Chris speaks of the importance a person’s sense of fulfillment can have upon them. Feeling as though one has nothing to lose. Some wishes are laid to rest as the dream of a dead man, and for other ones a person would give everything to see them brought to life.

The rest of the lyrics work to further visualize the death of memories and wishes. “Flies hovering above my head,” “Memories for a pillow and regret for a bed,” “Sunken ship ever does come in.” Chris had witnessed the years pass by...the changing of the seasons. He had seen lives shine in and out of the spotlight, as flowers blooming for a season before withering away.

This song evokes a state of sorrowful beauty which will live on, though Chris rests beneath the earth...another dead memory, another sunken ship beneath the depths of a burning lake. A feeling to spark another wish to chase with nothing in this world to lose.
