| James Blake – I Need a Forest Fire Lyrics | 8 years ago |

One of the most introspective and powerful songs I have heard in a long time. This song is an expression of the torment of being a fake or shallow person. The singer is growing tired of keeping up with his own falseness. "Shade" and "shadow" is a metaphor for where he resides all the time. He wants to burn his false image "like cedar" and "request another dream". Cedar wood is a soft wood and it burns very hot and rapid, which signifies the urgency that he wants to be through with this particular "chapter" in his life and maybe construct another persona or move on entirely? "I'm saved by nature But it always forgets what I need I hope you'll stop me before I build a wall around me" He recognizes his natural ability to be fake and blend in but nature can't protect his tormented soul in this case, and that is to be real, for once. "You're thicker than you think You know that money bought your name Caution, swelling, can I repay you with some blame?" James Blake is English and being "thick" is slang for being dumb. He's acknowledging that he is dumber than he thinks he is because money has an enslaving effect on many of our choices in life, even so much so that you identify with you employer as much as you do your own name, in some cases. So you are being cautious and every breath you take is a deep one least anyone finds out that you are fake. Lo and behold, your conscious repays your falseness with more blame and condemnation. He really needs a forest fire to burn it all down! |
