| @[Rickvee:20779] My interpretation was same as "trashcanpoet", as in, yes your are bigger than jesus (and make sure you know that), but don't act like it, stay humble. | |

The chorus is such a brilliant way of putting father-to-son important life advice into words "Don't call what your wearing an outfit" - don't let how you look or dress define you, calling it an "outfit", implies that your dress is important and somehow part of you. "Don't ever say our car is broke" - you can fix anything and get yourself out of any situation, no matter how challenging "Don't worry about losing your accent..." - know your roots and be proud of your regional quirks "Have fun, stay clear of the needle" - have fun, enjoy life, but stay away from hard drugs "Call home on your sister's birthday" - stay close to your family and roots "Don't tell them your bigger than Jesus, don't give it away." - stay confident, know you are special, but stay humble. Amazing. |

This is some of the finest work from one of the finest songwriters in the world right now. It's so bleak, melancholy and morbid, but it shows just how much he adores Amanda. He can't even imagine a time where one of them could live without the other but he is coming to a realization that it will happen. Absolutely gut-wrenching Brilliant. |

| Drive-By Truckers – Loaded Gun in the Closet Lyrics | 8 years ago |

My interpretation of the song had nothing to do with murder/suicide/murder-suicide, I think that's a little bit too literal and dark. i think the gun in the closet is the man's strange way of trying to provide his wife with some level of security and "power" despite them living what seems to be a very ordinary life with their gender roles consistent to gender stereotypes (man works, woman stays home cooks him dinner, gives him beers etc.) While the feminist mindset would be that the woman is powerless, the man leaves the gun in the closet as a gift to the woman that if he ever does anything to hurt her she still has the power to do something about it. |
