My first thought was North Africa - the Maghreb, with its former French colonies. These people know how to deal with sandstorms (wind), and the sandstorm is the natural enemy of the western invaders. I didn't know there's a Russian word Mouzhik. So I thought of a French first name. But indeed the French transferred the Russian name into Moujik with the same meaning "simple man". So, obviuosly Byrne has well selected this name ... Considering the song was written in the late 1970s. There was no East European war and even the Russian invasion in Afghanistan had not yet taken place. There was no simple Sowjet man living in a desert fighting the Americans. Therefore I say Maghreb (Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco)! |
