@[utj90:21601] Great interpretation, but I'd like to one small comment. I don't think that it is specifically about technological advancements, but rather working hard at something for your own gain and success. In an interview, Matt Griener said that this was influenced by a friend they had that spent years as a workaholic trying to find happiness through success. No matter how much he achieved, it was never enough. He ended up burning himself out and got seriously depressed and suicidal. Overall, I feel that this song is about how, you cannot appreciate life as it was supposed to be appreciated, and cannot find lasting joy, by living with a selfish focus on yourself. Like the first 4 lines say, people use the shortness of life as an excuse to prioritize themselves. My other slight disagreement is in your interpretation of "if everything is relative, then why the emptiness in our souls." I believe that this is a comment on the fact that the overwhelming belief today is that there is no absolute truth, but that everything is what we make of it. ABR is saying that that belief is why they feel such emptiness. If you don't live your life for the truth, for loving others, then you will not find your true purpose and joy. "Trying to untie the knot we thought we were untying our entire lives We're busied up and burnt out" That is the knot they thought they were untying. All that their work at their own success accomplished was that they 'busied up and burnt out'. They just now are realizing that their selfish achievement and work was in vain (and that they now have to untie the not, since they had wasted their time thinking that they were doing so with their work, but really were not). Awesome interpretation, just wanted to share my thoughts when I read it. God bless! |

| @[ReddBitesAugust:20738] I think that it is intentionally open to the interpretation as a loved one passing, but I also agree that it is about Jesus. It makes so much more sense in that light. | |

| @[Ericm1852:20737] Wow, now that i think about it, it really does seem to be about the crucifixion. They like to make the lyrics intentionally have multiple interpretations, so I don't think that it is at all wrong to say that it is about the loss of a loved one, but the crucifixion perspective makes alot of the lyrics make total sense. Plus, Matt said in an interview that it was based on his faith and religious views. | |
