To me, this song is about someone waking up to a cold, cruel and stoic reality after living in an innocent and carefree way for a while. This innocence is the innocence of love - of throwing yourself wholeheartedly into something without ever thinking of the consequences, only to find despair once that love is lost.
The price that one pays for wisdom and maturity is a permanent disconnection from what is pure and beautiful. Once we are confronted with loss, we are never the same again, and the memories of everything that was meaningful and seemed to last forever haunt us. Because the songs depicts this in such a vivid and poignant way, it will always be one of my favourites, a song which I keep close to my heart. |
