Pet Shop Boys – Rent Lyrics 7 years ago
@[jayceeNL:20316] money means nothing for the rentboy because he just won't have it. It's just stuff his 'benefactor' gives him, whatever he wants. So money means nothing as in, it doesn't matter how expensive is what he wants, he will get it eventually, as the other part can afford such things just to maintain his love. But this could apply to any kind of relationship.

It's not unusual to find people from any gender being in a relationship out of pure interest. I think this one apply to this, although it could have been written with 'rentboys' specifically in mind, but that's just a detail that limits the reach of this powerful verses.

I find it specially moving the 'currency we spent' verses, as in, both parts never really state what it is at stake in this game. Forcing love for survival, for higher standards of consumption? That shows a lack of self steem, a lack of self worth, and in such weakness is where the 'passive' part of the two ends giving up his hopes, his dreams, replaced by shallow goals, and that's the true value of the currency they spent, what they never calculate, because words mean nothing in this relationship. And money, less, because one will never have it, and the other just has too much to even care.
