| @[AmericanaFUBAR:28369] . I agree and think the problem with a lot of modern American Christianity is trying to hard to sound like songs "of the world" and not just say what is on there minds. I personally feel like there are many artists who write incredibly spiritual songs without classifying it as strictly Christian. God is bigger than just one religion, and one set of of rules and Dogma, so therefore songs can tap into the great mystery from many different avenues, or genres. I would say other spiritual songs that have much meaning but are not Christian are Landslide by Fleetwood Mac, One by U2, Unforgiven by Metallica. I have found deep meaning in all of these songs that connected to something in my life. Others are Bob Marley's 3 little birds, and Redemption Song. I could go on. They just keep popping in my head now. | |

The eternal battle of Good and Evil and its current status! I agree with the obvious cover reference to the French revolution, and that this song refers to the French Revolution but also the larger battle at hand that has been going on since time immemorial ( I love saying time immemorial). I like the idea of the devil being an entity that has been at war with God forever. The Book of Job talks about how the devil tempted Job and was allowed to do so, the Book of Revelations talks about how the devil will be given a time to rule, and then that time will be taken from him, will he be destroyed or just thrown into a lake of fire for another thousand years before the whole cycle starts again? and then the devil will be given a time to control the power of the air (i.e. tv and radiowaves!!) The devil has a great power of manipulation. He is called the Master of Lies. So re-read the lyrics and think about the devil speaking them. Like Rolling Stones "Sympathy For the Devil", the song is from the narrative of the devil, I believe. He is the puppet master who controlled the king "puppet on a lonely string", and then mocks him as "who would want to be King?" In the opening verse, the narrator states that there was a time when he ruled the world by large battles and grandiose demonstrations, but now he sweeps the streets he used to own. If this was only about the French Revolution I don't understand how this applies. I think it refers to how a great manipulator might hide in plain sight and keep an eye on things he wants to influence. Jerusalem is mentioned intentionally because that is the site of the greatest prize that he is still seeking. he is asking for help from the listener to be his sword, his shield, his mirror while he pursues his prize from anonymity. Messed up right? Going along with this biblical battle connotation, When it states that he held the key but the walls were closed in , that could refer to when he held the keys to death and hell for a short time during the time of Christ death but after Christ resurrection the walls closed in on him and the keys were taken away. The Bible refers to a moment and a very important shift in power when Christ went to hell to reclaim the souls who had passed before He was born and died and rose again. It refers to this time as Christ retrieving the keys to Death and Hell. Jesus cracked the walls and they crumbled, a revolution of spiritual significance. Pillars of Salt and Pillars of Sand are both religious sounding terms for sure. Pillars of Salt being built by sin and wickedness, like Lots wife turning back to remember her sinful cities Sodom and Gomorrah. The pillars of Sand I think refer to the general state of Humanity to fall short and continually err, which is why we need something to hold us together like Grace and Love, a foundation on which we can build. Revolutionaries wait For my head on a silver plate Just a puppet on a lonely string Oh, who would ever want to be king? The revolutionaries wait for the head of a puppet . So if it is a puppet , there is a puppet master who is the narrator of the song. It is a great song! Any song that can make me think of all these things all at once just by a few lines of poetry and great accompanying music is a good one! |
