Ryan said in an interview somewhere on YouTube that the meaning of the song is basically a conversation between him and Molly. In the video, the interviewer asks them how being in a band has impacted their sibling bond and their music to which Ryan replies that the music has helped them to have conversations that are typically hard to have with each other, 'Baby Boy' being one of them. He goes on to say that the song is basically someone (him) who is dwindling down into this spiral of self-destruction and how this person is calling out to someone for help, that someone in this case being Molly (of course this someone is just general for anybody). |

I made an account today just so I could reply to this with the meaning of the song LOL. Earlier today I was watching an interview with Ryan and Molly talking a little bit about "No Culture" (this interview took place some time before the album was released) and they were talking a little about the meaning of 'Letter'. From my understanding, while it seems like this song is about unrequited love between this guy and his ex-lover, Ryan said that it was actually about the narrator kind of self-reflecting on his past life and "romanticizing the past" to quote from said singer. I did a little thinking on this (I was pretty confused on the actual meaning considering the lyrics), but I decided to go back and listen to it with this perspective in mind, and it actually does make a little sense the more you think about it. This guy taking a look back onto his past life, maybe he was happier years ago and his life's grown to be not so happy because some life changing event happened or something, and he's basically begging somebody to give him a chance to experience his past life before he ultimately has to give that up and move on with his life. "All that I ever loved is lost in the past", "me and your memory before I let go", and "So is it just a little overkill writing the days away?" are lines that personally help me to understand Ryan's interpretation better on the song. |
