Kay Hanley – Galapagos Lyrics 8 years ago
One of the best "dying relationship" songs. Kay knows she must end things, though the time isn't right yet. Such an aching portrayal of regret.

Oh, and "Why Galapagos?" Because, like Darwin's finches, the two characters in this story have slowly grown apart, until they're no longer compatible.

I've always imagined this is a song about the dangers of falling in love with a Goddess. Poor Solomon never stood a chance. It was amazing at first, but he's been done with life for thousands of years, and she won't let him go.

This fits nicely with the "mythological" feel of other songs on this album, specifically "Angel".

I do also like the idea that song is the end of a very long relationship, long past its youthful vigor and romance, but still important to the singer.

@[kenfo00:20170] The "Silver Baby" is a dream-like reference to the "Little girl she used to be", and represents some unresolved self-destructive memories. At this point, the dream is breaking up; the girl "spins around the tree".

I think each "character" in this song is an expression of some part of the narrator's life. Gender switching makes it interesting. Maybe the "narrator" in their old age felt more like an old man. (Or maybe "man" just fit better lyrically.)

Alternately, each character is a separate person buried beneath the tree, and their souls and stories begin to blend together.

Huh. I always heard the opening lyric as "Bring him to me..."
Which makes "I'd still rather have the man" make more sense.

Regardless, Tanya's use of repetition in this one really makes me think of some old Sumerian poems I've read.
