| Gotye – Smoke & Mirrors Lyrics | 4 years ago |

You know, 'Mother' does not have to be a person. 'Mother' can be anything which gives someone comfort and makes them feel accepted and understood. By the same token, ' Mother' could be something bad, and that would be reminiscent of a cold, callous mother. In this case, I don't know. I can't relate to any songs about bad mothers. I loved my mom to infinity and beyond, so if a song is about an overbearing mom, like a stage mom, or a cruel mom, I can't decipher it. |

I've posted other comments, and I wanted to add that I think the verse "Cause while you were sleeping I took over your town" refers to the polls, he swept a town in the polls. So I think the song is about a politician, but who? The cowardly politicians of the last 30 years never served in the military. |

@[PineapplePrince:39549] That is an excellent comment. I had no idea what the meaning was. I wondered if it had anything to do with the movie "Permanent Midnight" where I first heard it. It was also in the movie "The Interview." You would think the songs heard in a movie would have some relevance to the movies' theme, but no, I guess not. |

@[AllyMcNally:36328] Well this is AllyMcNally, only my new handle is Aleemay. My latest interpretation is that the song is about the life of a senator, his service in Vietnam, his political career, and eventually, his disillusionment and disenchantment with American politics and our justifications of foreign wars. Maybe overthinking the song too much but at least I'm listening. |

| Peter Gabriel – Digging In The Dirt Lyrics | 4 years ago |

I think he wrote this for Rosanna Arquette. Peter and Rosanna were a couple for a few years, although it was not well known. Rosanna got an offer to pose for Playboy. Peter told her "No way, don't you do it. I don't want other men looking at your body. That's for me, and me alone." She ignored his feelings on the issue and posed anyway. It cost her the relationship. Peter broke up with her soon afterward. This is what I think the song is about. |

| Forget the lyrics. Why did he have red creepy demonic looking eyes at the end of the video? I don't like getting creeped out, and I don't listen to bands who do that to me. | |
| Genesis – Mama Lyrics | 8 years ago |

This song is about heroin, and the inevitable physical pain from withdrawal. "Stay don't leave me Mama", refers to the person facing dope sickness, and how that is so dreaded, yet inevitable. Don't ask the artists. They will take you on a wild goose chase about the meaning. Maybe they don't want people to know. Maybe they want people to figure it out for themselves. Extrapolate from your life experiences. Those are the best song meanings. |

| Hozier – Take Me to Church Lyrics | 8 years ago |
| Everybody says this song is about the criminalization of homosexuality in Russia. If you have some years of alternative living under your belt, meaning activities which run counter to mainstream societal mores, you would know what it means in a heartbeat. This song is straight up about using drugs, only Hozier is being evasive about this. An artist can lie. They actually should. Look what they did to Kurt and Courtney when they were up front about their heroin usage. They sent in CPS, and threatened to take their kid away. You can't be too careful these days. Still, the song is just oozing with drug connotations and innuendos. Hozier did an excellent job of subterfuge with the video. It's not what you see, it's what you don't see. | |
| Susie Suh – Here with Me Lyrics | 8 years ago |
| I've thought this song was about losing your significant other. I inquired about the meaning of the song, and was quite surprised to see she apparently wrote it for Robot Koch to express her love. Hmmmm. All those tears for nothing? No, I think music is interpretive. If I want it to be about losing somebody I love, then that's what it's about. Music is subjective, and personal. Whatever the universal meaning, it is a beautiful, haunting melody. | |
