| Stealers Wheel – Stuck In The Middle With You Lyrics | 8 years ago |

The song is about alcoholism, losing control to it and getting totally drunk at a bar. Getting so drunk, afraid he'll fall off the barstool. Drunken "friends" slap him on the back, pleading him for free drinks -- thinking he can afford it, being a self-made man. He's self-aware that he needs to stop (I don't think that I can take anymore.) The second and third verses are of him admitting he has a drinking problem, trying to make sense and come to terms with his drinking. The drinking is causing uncontrolled smiling and causes him to run amok. Sleeping on the floor (or any cool surface like the side of a toilet seat) is typical behavior for anyone totally drunk. At this low point, he admits he is at the end of his rope with the line: "I don't think that I can take anymore." The last verse repeats the first verse, showing this is a cursed repeating pattern: going back to a bar again to get drunk, wondering why he keeps going and why he can't control himself and his drinking. Rafferty died from alcoholism (liver failure) and wrote many songs that referred to his drinking problems such as Baker's Street and One Drink Down. Sadly, he battled alcoholism and depression most of his adult life. Loved the man's music. |
