The song's probably about Andy telling either Jesus, God or religion in general to leave him alone. The line "And into fights lasting hours about your dad's ghost" probably gives it away. If there's no heaven, Andy, then where's your grandpa? Andy's a pastor's child and he might've just had this conversation before. Additionally, the last lines seem to allude to Exodus. To me, however, this song has a much more personal interpretation. I bought this record a few months back during the concluding phase to a very traumatic relationship I'd been caught in. In the end, after a long period of holding on to an ill and troubled woman, she disappeared without a trace leaving only a handwritten note. To me personally, this song is about trying to move on. I want her to leave me alone. Yet all sorts of little things remind me of her. The other day I came across a video of her by accident- one I'd never seen before. I figured the relationship would just grow, but it became so bad and traumatic instead. Having had no closure, I'm frightened at the prospect of a new relationship. Its replicated fear throws me off. I tried getting in contact with her a few times. She read what I wrote, then decided to ignore me. I don't see her anymore, but her memory haunts me. A beautiful morning is ruined when I accidentally stumble upon something she left behind. I was, and am so prepared to be taken along in her troubles. Sometimes it feels like if it's not with her, I've got no place to go. But in the end, let's face it. After she became this way, it's never be the same. She doesn't need my help; she's doing just fine on her own. Painful. |
