NB: My use of the term "friend" here is loose- could it be an actual friend or relative? is it referring to suicidal fans? I think Tyler purposely used "friend" instead of a name (and purposely did not use any specific pronouns) so that people could themselves relate I see it as him finding out how his friend has been dealing with mental illness and suicidal thoughts, but have tried to hide it. However, he has noticed the subtle changes in behaviour ("Living like a ghost you walk by everyone you know//You say that you're fine but you have lost your sway and glow) He is trying to give his friend a reason to stay alive- if they can't do it for themselves, do it for him ("Friend, please don't take your life away from me") "remove your hands from// Over your eyes for me" means that the friend thought they were alone ("but when did you believe you were alone?") and Tyler is saying that they just can't see they have people there for them- they just need to look properly My favourite part of the song is: "Would you let me know your plans tonight?// 'Cause I just won't let go 'til we both see the light// And I have nothing else left to say// But I will listen to you all day, yes I will" I have interpreted as Tyler talking his friend out of any suicidal plans they may have had, he says he will stay there to stop them doing anything bad to themselves and to let the friend just talk about their issues A very deep and meaningful song My interpretation is very basic but I belief it has been made very clear on purpose- so people with suicidal thoughts could not fail to notice the message of the song :) |
