The Smiths – Girlfriend in a Coma Lyrics 10 months ago
When I first heard this song it made me break out in fit's of laughter. The Juxtaposition of happy music with such serious lyric's reminded me of a similar song of the times by Johnny Hates Jazz called Shattered Dreams. With repeated listening I began to see another side to the lyrics. The song is perfect in that each idea presented along with the music, telegraphs the meaning. His girfriend is not in a coma by accident. He put her there during one of their arguments when he "could've murdered her". At first guilt causes him to stay away. Until he realizes she might wake up.Now he want's to see her to finish the job. Then he does while singing let me whisper my last goodbyes coming close enough to finish things without undue suspicion. What complicates this is that he genuinely cares for the girl. I get why people see this as metaphorical. Either about a relationship near it's end or his Heterosexuality nearing it's end. Or even the band nearing it's end. In Real life all 3 might have contributed to the melodrama in this perfect song.Yet I suggest the other 3 were not consciously what Morrisey was writing about. Though all 3 make solid metaphoric sense, I believe he's not intentionally discussing a metaphor. He is imagining the song from the point of view of an abusive but caring boyfriend who both misses her & is terrified she will wake up & ruin his life. The Desperation in the Line "Do you really think she'll pull through" is the one time in the song the music does not sound happy or hopeful. This combined with the incongruent nature of the rest of the song, to the situation & leads to the sober climax "let me whisper my last Goodbye's". The ambiguity dares the listener to look below the surface. There are simple songs, this isn't one of them. Several of the potential metaphors match similar emotions. But the "do you really think she'll pull through" line becomes meaningless then. The dual emotions indicate that he cares but is becoming certain he must finish the job. No I don't think Morrisey actually killed someone. That said it is easy to see him understanding that emotion. His biting sarcasm shows he is familiar with anger. Such a meaning & the humorous incongruety of the music would have delighted him . Knowing only a small percentage of fans will see the intended meaning.

Kate Bush – Wow Lyrics 2 years ago
@[daferdaty:38208] Not likely. Anyone acquainted with acting knows that the business is filled at every level with people who are gay. Such intolerance would havea very short shelf life in the business. There might be 1 or 2 individuals who have discriminated in a particular circumstance but to do so blatantly would be career suicide. Kate was still a teenager when she wrote this song and was probably not protesting the exclusion of gays from the theater. Though I suspect she was touching on gender roles and their being bent by some within the industry but I could be wrong here too. She has not done a thesis on her meanings in this song.

@[Drnash1221:38047] I'm certain your mother told you this with much emotion and it may have applied to a situation she was once in.But Peter Allen wrote the song about his own experience of being Married to Liza Minelli & being in love with another Man who like him was married. Hence lines like "There You are with Yours and here I am with Mine" that do not apply to the situation you describe. It was written and recorded as a demo with Peter singing it more than 3 months before it was a hit for Olivia Newton John.

Olivia Newton-John – I Honestly Love You Lyrics 2 years ago
@[veryken:38046] Whether ONJ is sweet or innocent is not something one can determine from just hearing her sing this or any song. Olivia was not a song writer and did not write "I Honestly
Love You". What she is , is a fantastic interpreter of the songs of others. Who knows what she is really like other than her friends and family. Peter Allen is the songwriter and he wrote it in memory of a situation tha occurred while he was married to Liza Minelli. He had worked with Liza's mother Judy Garland who fixed the 2 of them up. But there was something he never told them which is that he was Gay. And while married to Liza he fell in love with a friend of his who like him was also Gay and Married to a Woman. It isn't clear if he ever told his friend but he and Liza were Seperated after less than 3 years of marriage and divorced after 6. He may have. The song is not about the response he received but the emotions that made him want to say something. Looking at it that way lines like "we both know I've got somewhere else to go" & "There you are with Yours and here I am with Mine" make far more sense. Far from being innocent the song is about complex emotions like loving 2 people simultaneously. Yet realizing that the other person's happiness may be more important than your new found feelings of love. The emotion is noble but not necessarily innocent. It is not spelled out because doing so would make the song's meaning only apply to a small niche group of people instead of feeling universal as it does. The Song and probably Olivia too is far deeper than it appears at face value. Appearances may or may not be deceiving.

@[flayerhater:36158] I could be wrong but I tend to think the song is not what it appears to you. There are no pictures of him dressing like the character described in the song. Just pictures of him in Suits and ties. Sweet Surrender is more likely about him but I would not take that to the bank. She is a cross between the girl next door and an indie rock queen but chose a stable man to marry. Later they divorced a year after having a 2nd child in 2008. And Ashwin Sood Grew up in a Brahmin caste family from India hardly a blue collar guy.

@[Borderliner:35511] I'm rather certain that it references fisting. It may also reference Borderline personality disorder but that is less clear from the Lyrics. I don't see it but I do not have Borderline personality disorder. Apparently I needit tofigure this out. Which essentially means that Maynard would have to have it to write about it. Or at least years of research into the subject. That said I am not intending to demean those who have it. There but for the Grace of a God that either exists or doesn't Go I. And I am no better. None of us choose our afflictions. But we all have them. Anyway Maynard is the type of guy who would write a song with 2 meanings or more just to see if people get them.

John Lennon – God Lyrics 3 years ago
@[Kenny5271957:35243] your interpretation of this does seem to mesh with what was going on in John's life at the time. He was definitely in a phase of finding himself and rejecting the Magical associations and expectations he had placed on other people, idea's, religions and belief systems. He had no ill will towards those people and ideas. But he had expected too much of people, religion, being like Elvis etc.. He had learned a lot but he had not learned how to be happy or to get what he wanted when he wanted to. Nor had he learned to control his base instincts like anger , selfishness or covetousness. I don't say that to downgrade him as I Myself have struggled with the same issues. Over the 5 years that folowed he did much. From inspiring many with Imagine, to an affair with his housekeeper to playing with Chuck Berry and Elton John. Then he went in to a long seclusion that appeared to have a centering affect on the man. He and Yoko had a child on John's 35th, reepaired their marriage and then just as he was coming out of his self imposed isolation and he had new Music He was killed by a fan who apparently thought John owed him something for having become his idol. Reports were that he was calming but we all do at 40 or so.There is no way of knowing what the next decade or decades would have brought him. In many ways I think it saved his image for posterity. Double Fantasy would have been huge either way. Seeing a Resurgent John become popular in the eighties and perhaps have followup hits might've made him into a caicature of his former self, or not.But in 1970 he had not found so much the answer as an answer to what he did not believe.

@[III:35156] He wrote songs about many women other than Sara. He wrote this song while on his honeymoon with Sara which makes me think that in this song she may be more analogous to Louise. It surely was not a coincidence that he first sang this song at a performance in San Francisco that was attended by his Ex Joan Baez in December of 1965. I do believe Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands was about Sara but he references at least 5 women he has been involved with on Blonde on Blonde. He clearly had deep feelings for Sara, Joan, Suze Rotolo and later Carolyn Dennis. He wrote love songs to each of them. But he also wrote complaint songs about them as well.

@[SuitBoy:35155] That suit is choking your brain. Or was. Point is the song has multiple references to Joan Baez from the Name to his nickname for her which was Madonna because she resembles the Virgin Mary. Positively 4th street probably references Edie Sedgewick. That said the rest of Blond on Blond is about people like his wife Sara, Joan and perhaps a few others. His lyrics are so peculiar one has to assume that each song has specific meanings to each word and Phrase that only he for certain knows. Otherwise he would just sing La-La-La, La-La-La, La-La-La and end phrases with meaningless rhymes. But I suspect there are many things that he sings that only a few individuals who know or knew him understand.

@[varietymatt:35148] Best Interpretation I've seen yet. Not saying if it is perfect or anything because Bob won't let us know. That said I still look at this and have to ask if I'm the only one of Bob Dylan's current fans aware that he once dated Joan Baez and that they were friends for long after that ended. Johanna is awfully similar to Joan and seems to be who he might've been referring to.

@---twigs--- I have to think this song was about Joan Baez in some way. Other lines seem to reference her as well. He had told her she resembled The Madonna on a few ocasions. I can't swear on a stack of Bibles it is but come on. Who else did he have a multidecade on again off again relationship with. Johanna seems to be a way of saying Joan without being blunt about it.Another peculiarity is that his first performance of it took place at a performance in San Francisco at which Joan was present. He frequently seemed to play his wife Sara Lowndes and Joan off against each other and for all I know he switched identities to make the message more obscure. Anyway I'm rambling but it seems likely considering the evidence that is omnipresent. Of course when he wrote the song he had known Joan about 4-5 years and was just now married to his bride Sara.

@[blondweezl:29164] I'm still looking to understand this song so I am open. But I am open while at the same time asking questions. Sarah's music often touches on spiritual ideas. But she also try's hard to be transparent and down to earth at the same time. I can not saythat your interpretation is inaccurate but some of the lines here seem to be directly to another human being that she seems to care for and yet fear letting down. It however is plausible to say that the song may have more than one meaning. I see the song as Her saying to a partner or former flame that maybe she was wrong and is willing to try things his or her way. There seems to be a sense of previous experience with and yet a newness in this acquaintance.

@[Jakebert:28761] Yeah Jakebert be real. Nevermind went Diamond in the US(sold 10 million copies) before Kurt died and In Utero had already sold 5 million copies World wide. Oh yeah and do you remember the Alternative rock craze of the 1990's. With out Nirvana it either does not happen or is not nearly as big. Ever Since "Smells like Teen Spirit" became popular in late 1991 thousands of acts have written and performed music influenced by Nirvana. Now this next part might seem unfair to Pink Floyd and Queen but think about it. Pink Floyd and Queen were such unique I think they broke the mold type groups that very few artists write Music that is influenced by them. The Only clear examples I can think of ,of Groups borrowing ideas from Pink Floyd is in the early work of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin who are more influential groups because their music was easier to play. As far as Queen I can't really think of any act that reminds me of them. To be Honest Queen excellent as they were is an example of a band influenced by the Popularity of Progressive Rock in England. Not the other way around. Whether a group is influential has no relation to skill either. If it did it would be very difficult to explain the The Sex Pistols. But there is no reason to attack a band for not being like Queen or Pink Floyd. And lack of talent can be overcome with hard work and creativity. The English group Lush comes to mind.

@[itsALLprogramMUSIC:28623] You'll probably think I am a Jack *ss for pointing this out but you are talking about the chorus not the bridge. Bridges generally only occur once in a song and this song is a perfect example of that. In this song the Bridge has the lines "And it won't matter now/ Whatever happens will be/ Though the air outside speaks of all we'll never be/It Won't bother me. Bridges only repeat when the song is exceptionally long and require a peak in the the tension built in the song once more before the song ends. Choruses generally repeat after each verse. I see it has been 14 years since this comment so it is probable that you have learned this by now. But the comment could Royally confuse a younger person who might begin to see the Chorus and the Bridge as interchangeable names for the same thing.

AFI – Miss Murder Lyrics 5 years ago
You are reading more into it then the words merit. But you then cover this by asking an existential question at the end as a cop out to keep people from analyzing your ideas. To your credit you are well read and I certainly can not say that all of your ideas are bogus. But if he throws enough darts even a blind man can get a bulls eye now and then. A better way to find meaning might be to see if the band has said something about the songs meaning on line. But I suspect they have not said much or someone else here would have more to say about this. Certainly the song has a not so veiled Anti-Religious message . A possible point of the song is that he is accusing religious people of giving people beliefs they are willing to die for. Of course he postulates that since it is likely in his opinion that the hope these people have is false that essentially they die prematurely for no good reason. So his question is can he remain beautiful by taking his own life as if he is trying to learn from her when he sees faith as ridiculous. That is just 1 possible explanation of the song but it is justified by the words here with out going too far away from the text. That said mant religions do address the question of who is worthy. Christianity is noteworthy for saying that none are but if you ask forgiveness for your sins. wickedness, whatever you call it That God allows you to grab it's brass ring of eternal life. This being America the songs argument is less with the faith then with those who believe. I suspect miss Murder is someone who tried to share their faith with one of the band members far too agressively. But until the Cliff note for Alternative music come out it is just a guess.

@[allstar2003:19633] It does seem to bring up the inevitability of death as all their songs do. But it is mostly about THE IDEA THAT LIFE GOES ON, EVEN AS WE FACE A CATASTROPHY THAT MAY OR MAY NOT ALTER OR EVEN END OUR WORLD. THAT EVEN AS WE ARE ON THE DOWNSLIDE OTHERS ARE STILL CLIMBING THE HILL OR PUSHING OUR BURDENS UP THAT HILL. And perhaps also the realization that regardless of whether the World is ending or not. Most of us can't do very much about it so we might as well enjoy ourselves while we watch for signs.
