Randy Newman – A Few Words in Defense of Our Country Lyrics 8 years ago
@[pikaboo:19558] Yeah... that's my read. Pluto may LOOK like a planet, but it ain't. Similar things could be said about Thomas.

Randy Newman – Real Emotional Girl Lyrics 8 years ago
Totally agree. Randy wouldn't necessarily write a song like this without something lurking under the surface. When women sing it, it kind of loses that sleezy undercurrent. However, as sung by Randy, the character is telling his friend (or someone) about this emotionally damaged girl who he is taking advantage of for sex. One should hear the narrator and wonder why he is boasting to his listener about this. Sure, the song can be played totally straight, but it is much more effective with the second layer lurking beneath.

Randy Newman – Take Me Back Lyrics 8 years ago
Another classic Newman lyric about a total loser. The character grew up with a fairly vanilla life, despite his constant boasting. It sounds like his wife has now thrown him out. He fills his time in sad fondness for the past and by sleeping with college girls. I love how the line "take me back" serves a double purpose. It is the character begging his wife to "take him back", but it also a larger desperate wish to just be taken back to a time in his life where he hadn't squandered all his "potential" through selfish mistakes.

Elton John – Crazy Water Lyrics 8 years ago
I think this song is a metaphor for life on the road while touring as a musician. The men go out and the wives and families are left behind left to worry about what will be returning and when. It seems to defend the lifestyle, admitting that it is crazy and unorthodox, but also the only way to reap the rewards of life as a musician. If we never "dropped out nets", we'd have nothing to show for it.

Eric Hutchinson – Back To Where I Was Lyrics 8 years ago
Yep. Sounds like a guy who doesn't want a baby (or is not ready) and is trying to convince himself it will be okay, but to no avail. By the end, he seems a bit defiant - "Long as I'm allowed, I'll change my mind... that's what it's for!"

Eric Hutchinson – Outside Villanova Lyrics 8 years ago
Definitely underage girl... I think
it is really clear as soon as he says "she's only drinking soda" and "she's got some pullout sofa." The only thing I don't get is why people at work think he is a jerk when he is concealing the evidence.
