I think this song is about initiation into the esoteric. The dream and the slumber are the consensual reality of average Joe. The Golden Dawn is a fairly famous secret society. The owl is also a well known occult symbol because it sees in the dark, i.e. sees the secret meanings of esoteric symbology, and therefor, what's really going on. Behold the dream, the dream is gone! I can't believe no one else here trips out on the crazy Illuminatic implications of this song! It's not about sleeping. It's about waking up! Just think of the later Pink Floyd records and big hits; they're all profiting off of human foibles and fears: money, comfortably numb, another brick in the wall, have a cigar, time, etc. The list goes on. It's like they're selling you your own weaknesses. Obviously, they're in THE CLUB. The one beating your brains out. Didn't any of you go down the Robert Anton Wilson rabbit hole? Oh and by the way... Love the song. Bloody hilarious, boys! Captivatingly beautiful, too. |

It's about conflict and resolution, but the resolution only succeeds on a small scale, like a drug that treats a symptom but not the disease. In this case the disease is inequality in society. The characters in the song have a disagreement. It takes all day, but they eventually work it out and get over their hurt feelings. However, the last couple lines of the song seem to say that it doesn't change the big picture: the fish swim on like they always have, oblivious to the newly attained understanding and healing of mere individuals. Likewise, society, with all its myriad forms of inequality, won't be any less screwed up just because of some personal enlightenment, or epiphany, or decision to do good. Harsh! |
