song was originally written by Jules Shear, and included on his 1983 debut solo album, Watch Dog.[1] Shear later recalled in an interview, "[it's] like a big bonus really. Cyndi Lauper does a song ('All Through the Night') that's on a solo record of mine. I just thought, 'No one's really going to hear this.' Then she does it, and it becomes a Top 5 song."[2] "I'm just glad people know the songs, really. I think they're really good. The only problem is with people who don't know I wrote them. I do them and they think, 'God, he's doing that Cyndi Lauper song.'"[3]
Before Lauper covered the song, the band The Cars produced an early version of it that was not released.[4] Shear's version was originally a folk-rock song, but Lauper instead turned it into a pop ballad for her album, with a heavy emphasis on a synthesizer.[5][6] According to Lauper, she wanted it to be just like Shear's version, with a bit more of an acoustic sound. However, she changed her mind, saying that she wanted to sing it like herself.[7] Unlike her other singles from the album, this one did not have a music video released with it. |

@[Baz745:23041] Very interesting interpretation and it seems thought was applied to the process. I think to many people are happy to look for / at the beauty on the surface. You dug deeper and still found beauty, good for you. |

I would not at all be surprised if this was about spending time with a professional. I don't think it has anything to do with love. Both objects in the song are deeply troubled and they don't choose to see it. That's why the hours of darkness are a boundary, the past is irrelevant, street lights have a chance to illuminate but do not, a meter starts, when the meter ends its over except someone's troubles are bad enough they beg to stay when the other is asleep. Dying vigil could be another interpretation but I don't think it fits as well. Still it is a great song. Usually when you look into what the artist says about a song you think is all love and beauty the reality is far darker. I don't think I am projecting here. |

Does anyone else think that dpatterson is actually Dennis Wilson??? If Dennis Wilson had not died in 1983 I would be sure of it. His comments sound like an egocentric spurned ex. That not being the case I have no idea why he misinterpreted Barracuda so incredibly.
This song is about a feud with the label, always has been and always will be. Whether it was Mushroom, Portrait the man who inquired about her lover, handlers or the industry in general can be debated ad nausea. I think it was left vague so the focus could be from high to low singular or all encompassing. Due to this creative strategy they were less likely to suffer retaliation from those offended. |
