"I just believe in me" means he is all these things. He is just John, but he is also all those things he listed. You are god and god is you. He is hitler, he is yoga, he is Jesus and he is Elvis, he is the beatles and he is John. He is all these things. We all are.
Sadly, John seemed to be searching his whole life for something to fill the hole inside. I suspect some cynicism in this song, but maybe he realised that he is all he ever really needed. Self love. |

He walked once suffered in darkness, restless and walked alone, then one night in a flash of light he found ten thousand "people". He saw these ten thousand people that could talk without speaking, hear without listening. It's impossible to intepret this literally. You can't see ten thousand people talking without voices and hearing things in a place of no sounds. An the neon sign was flashing that ten thousand "people" were bowing and praying to...a sign that spoke of truth...look for the words of the universe in everything...even on subway walls, there is beauty in the most mundane things |

I love reading everyone's intepretation but I'm suprised so many people have intepreted the sound of silence literally. As in, the inablity to effectively communicate. My thoughts are that the song is about spirituality. The sound of silence and the light that split the night is the spiritual realm, entity, God, higher presence, higher self, larger self or whatever you interpret it to be in your spiritual beliefs. Indeed, like most people said I think its about ignorance...a moment of deep suffering (darkness) and a moment of breathtaking clarity about what lies within the sound of silence. The ten thousand people he saw that could talk without speaking and hear without listening is again about God/souls/spirits/higher self/higher beings. They were wiser than him, they had the knowledge of the universe. Thats why when he called them fools his words fell and echoed like silent raindrops into the wells of silence. Which is the wells of knowledge, wisdom and love. This to me is about a spiritual awakening. The words of the prophets are there, so obvious on subway walls, yet only those who have awakened will see and understand. |
